Battle IaDrang V Viet Nam Basil Plumley Dead at 92

Re: Battle IaDrang V Viet Nam Basil Plumley Dead at 92

What is the distinction of being 'command sergent major over simply SMaj?

Re: Battle IaDrang V Viet Nam Basil Plumley Dead at 92

So is there such a rank as CmSGM of the Army, or would that be a seperate category?

Re: Battle IaDrang V Viet Nam Basil Plumley Dead at 92

Its kind of a seperate catagory, but not really a different rank. They are both E-9s.

Kind of likea First Sgt and a Master Sgt. Both E-8s, but one (1st Shirt) is in a command position, that being the senior enlisted in the company.

Like Officers, A Captain can be in a Command, (Company Commander) or a Staff Officer.

Ranks from Wikipedia

"United States Army
In the U.S. Army, sergeant major refers to both a military rank and a specific administrative position. The rank refers to the highest enlisted rank, just above first sergeant and master sergeant, with a pay grade of E-9, NATO rank OR-9 . The leadership position, command sergeant major, is the senior enlisted advisor to the commanding officer and carries with it certain ceremonial functions such as caring for the unit's colors (flag). Additionally, they serve as monitors of, and advocates for, the enlisted soldiers in the command. This position mostly exists in units of battalion size and larger.
Because the command sergeant major represents all of the enlisted soldiers in the command, he or she does not wear the collar insignia of his or her career specialty (e.g., infantry, quartermaster, intelligence, inter alia), but instead wears the command sergeant major (formerly "branch immaterial") collar insignia. The insignia is a gold-color rendering of the coat of arms of the United States; like the branch of service insignia of all U.S. Army enlisted soldiers, it is placed upon a gold-colored metal disk, one inch in diameter.
A SGM or CSM is referred to, and addressed, as "Sergeant Major". The Sergeant Major of the Army is a separate and unique position, but is still addressed as "Sergeant Major"

Re: Battle IaDrang V Viet Nam Basil Plumley Dead at 92

I was in line to make SGM. In what was once (before disbandment) the 38th SF Company, AK ARNG. I was an E-7. Our SGM was do to retire and I was offered the slot, I would make E-8, given the slot and when I had the time, E-9 or given a choice, to go to OCS.

I elected to take the E-9 slot. But at the same time I took one of our team captains to Little Rock for the NG Rifle Championships.

Problem is the Cpt was from Arkansas and found a job, and transfered to the AR NG.

I got the blame for loosing the captain. Shortly there after I went to sniper school. I retured on a Friday night and found the Col waiting for me, saying I was to start OCS Monday.

So I got screwed out of my SGM Slot. Sucked, I'd had it made the rest of my NG career.

Not to distract from CMS Plumley, a real Soldiers Soldier.

Agreed, hard to watch men like that withering away with age, even though it's part of life.
