I am about to get my rifle back from Russell at SSC, and I want to clean this thing properly from the get go. I have never paid much attention to proper cleaning, simply because i was never taught to use bore guides, quality rods, nylon brushes etc. My rifle is 308 so i am going to order a 30 cal Dewey rod 44" and some nylon 30 cal brushes from sinclair. Is the 44" overkill with a rem700 SA and a lucas guide? Im also going to buy a Dewey parker hale jag in either 30 cal or .277. Would it be better to get the .277 and use larger patches or get the .30 cal. What size patches would you recommend.

Re: Rod Length and Jag Size Recomendations

Get the .30 cal Parker Hale jag.

Longer rods are better otherwise you will end up like me with a bunch of different rods in the same caliber. You can clean a short barrel with a long rod, but you can't clean a long barrel with a short rod.

I believe the patches I use are 2x2. You shouldn't be using more than a few patches at each cleaning, so if you have to cut a couple until you find the right size it's no big deal.
