Precision Rifle ...... Which One?

I want to purchase a precision rifle for long range shooting. My LGS suggested the Savage 10-FCP 26" .308 heavy with McMillan stock.....and the Vortex Viper PST scope..... But as far as the gun goes....it's 1,100.00 ..... Sure, there are more expensive out there, but is there any better options staying in this price range or lower?

Re: Precision Rifle ...... Which One?

That's an excellent starting platform. Savage builds accurate rifles, Mcmillan makes great stocks, and the Viper PST is a very good scope.
You're going to have to decide whether you want to go milrad or MOA on the scope, and decide whether or when you will start handloading.
.308 will let you get into a lot of matches, including F/TR. Look around at your local ranges, and ask the LGS if they can hook you up with any locals into LR.
Fill out your profile a little more (Kentucky's a big place) and you may have more luck with local contacts.

Re: Precision Rifle ...... Which One?

My Savage model12 LRP was about the same price. Great shooting rifle in my opinion, probably one of the better factory rifles in that price range. Though that model is only available in .243, .260, or 6.5CM. That model 10 is a fine rifle indeed. If I were looking at a .308, I'd pick one up with no second thought.

The Remington 700 sps is a hell of a shooter too. You might be able to get one of those for around the same price, maybe cheaper if ya find one on sale...

Re: Precision Rifle ...... Which One?

There's a Savage 10 with a Choate stock for around $750. I believe I saw it on the Cabela's website, so it may be a Cabela's exclusive. There's an HS Precision model of Savage 10 as well, which I believe is around $900.

That being said, the McMillan stock is excellent, and if you decide to go that route, I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Re: Precision Rifle ...... Which One?

The 26" Model 10 with McMillan is a helluva good rifle and I'm sure you'd be pleased with it. They shoot great right out of the box.

I admit, I am partial to Savage...so factor that into your decision.

Depending on your intents, you may want to consider something else in the lineup.

For example:

If you would like to add a suppressor in the future, buying something already threaded at the muzzle makes a lot of sense.

If you intend to spend a fair amount of time past ~750 yards or so, a different cartridge makes sense.

I'm not a huge fan of the HSP stock, but for $875, I think the Savage 12LRP in 260 or 6.5CM is a fantastic bargain. Target action, Target trigger, DBM, FAT fluted barrel, stiff decent stock, and great cartridges.

Re: Precision Rifle ...... Which One?

Keep your eyes out. Every once in a while there is a Savage FCP 308 that comes up for sale in a McMillan A5. I have one and love it. With FGMM 168's I am getting 1-1 1/2" groups at 300y. I have also owned a 5r. Both are comparable in price, and accuracy.

It's great to buy Savages used, particular the 308s. My 10FP barrel lasted about 6k rounds, and I abused the f*ck out of it and pretty much never cleaned it. It continued to shoot better and better and better until it crapped out.

For whatever reason, Savages don't hold their value well, so you can score a pretty sweet deal on a [slightly] used one. Highly recommend this.

Re: Precision Rifle ...... Which One?

I think one of the Savages with a name brand stock would be a good choice if you ever wanted to upgrade so you could sell it. I got 12 LRP and was surprised at how many people wanted to buy my HSP stock with DBM when I sold it. It was my first precision rifle and am very pleased so far with everything except smoothness and effort of bolt manipulation. Definitely not anything like my Rem's or T/C's hunting rifles.

There are some really great deals on here. Pick a caliber that you can afford to shoot a lot and then make it so. You'll figure out what you need after several shooting sessions or competitions then you can round up parts, buy another used one, or spring for a new one configured to your preferences. Either way, you're going to be happier behind the trigger than behind a keyboard.

Re: Precision Rifle ...... Which One?

Good advice from your LGS, but you will find much better bargains in For Sale section here which may include a good scope, which is also a necessity. Then get out and shoot and you will know much better your needs for LR shooting. My old eyes like bipod with bean bag rear support and higher magnification on scopes. Some illuminated reticles do not appear crisp to me. Once you're at the range most shooters don't mind letting you try their setups for a few shots. Almost too much fun to be legal !!!

Re: Precision Rifle ...... Which One?

I think all of Savage's Model 10 308 offerings are 24", not 26".

Also, while the McMillan A5 is a great stock (I have two) and the 10FCP-McM is a good value if you plan on upgrading to an A5 in the future, the 10FCP-HS is nearly $170 less expensive than the McM model and the 10FP-SR is just $575 from Bud's up in Lexington.

The 10FP-SR stock isn't great, but it is servicable and will get you shooting right now, and give you an opportunity to try various aftermarket stocks so you can order exactly which you prefer. It'll cost a little extra in the end than the FCP-McM but it'll spread the cost out over time and you'll get exactly what you want.

Another option is the Remington 700 Tactical (or AAC-SD); drop it in a Bell & Carlson M40 or A3 Medalist stock and go shoot. Going this route, you'll probably have the same invested as the 10FCP-HS (roughly $850).

As others have said, keep an eye open on the classifieds here and you can probably find something already well on its way to being set up for under $1100.

Re: Precision Rifle ...... Which One?

Another vote for the 5R. Holds its value well, great rifle out of the box, and a nearly endless list of options for customization.

Re: Precision Rifle ...... Which One?

Check out the FN Herstal TSR XP. Ive had both the new Savage FCP-SR
and currently have a FN TSR XP. I like the FN myself.
Shoots every bit as good as the Savage. I could not really tell
a difference as I could basically get identical groups with each.
I feel that says loads for the FN. I stuck with the FN due to the
incredibly smooth action.

Or a 700 AAC-SD would be a GREAT Choice Too! Look around, there's a few of these in the For Sell section very often and Great Deals!

Re: Precision Rifle ...... Which One?

Im a remington guy so I would recommend any 700 in 308 with a 26" barrel. The pst is an excellent scope, again your choice on mils or moa. Moa is the finer adjustment. Im also a fan of the B&C medalist adjustable stocks, they are a little cheaper than the McMillan with all of the same features. 308 is an excellent platform to start on with excellent factory ammo availible. You have to really make a 308 work at distances greater than 800 yds. It forces you to do all the right things to stay competitive. After you master 308 you can pick up any of the more effective cartridges and work magic out there.

That is a Cabela exclusive, I got one. It has a 26" barrel as well. Heavy, but extremely accurate, and WELL worth the money. With Black Hills, FGMM, and SW Ammo match, I shoot cloverleafs at 100 yds and hold my own at 1000. I had the barrel threaded for an AAC Breakout and am impatiently waiting for my 762-SDN-6 suppressor. In short, I love it.

Re: Precision Rifle ...... Which One?

If it was my money the choice would be easy, i'd save up another 95$ and buy one of the FN SPRs already linked.
http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3317427&gonew=1#UNREAD

It's a really good offer, for 95$ you get a SPR crf action that is superior to the others, the Win type 3 position safety is better then both Savage and Remingtons offer, Mcmillan A3 stock, Detachable box mag, 20 moa picatinny rail, a good, reliable trigger that's easy to adjust, and it's bedded already.
The accuracy of the FN SPR's is just as good as Savage and Remington, and the chrome lined barrel should last longer then a usual one.

Most other rifles still need a scope base, and might want someone to do the work for you.
Also I would not have a conventional stocked rifle that was'nt bedded, possible to do you're self of course, but if you're gonna pay a gunsmith for that too, then most other options would be just as expensive already.

If you're dead set on max 1100 for the rifle, I'd go with the 5r if you like the hs stock, far from everyone does.
Or get a tactical/AAC sell the stock and buy the stock you like the most.
