hows it going,

i am looking into rechaimbering my savage 110BA in 300win mag to a 300RUM. a local smith here in PA says the gains that i will get from this will be worth it as far as long range tactical match shooting.

in doing this the chaimber and throat will be match cut and the entire action blue printed. at the moment my savage shoots around 1MOA with good factory ammo. i am going to begin reloading soon for whatever caliber i go with. also recoil is not an issue considering the rifle is very heavy and has a substantial break on it. he says he will take my 1MOA gun and make it a 1/2MOA rifle if i do my part behind the trigger. total cost of the work and a new improved bolt head will total around 200$

the way he explained it was taking a camaro and turning it into a corvette z06. my question is, is it really worth it?

any advice on this or opinions would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Re: 300RUM opinions

300 RUM for tactical match's, at least the one's I've been to would be a major fail. I tried a 7mag and a big 30 cal also, it didn't work out so well.

Why??? Because it's important to see where you are hitting. Even a braked 300RUM will upset the rifle so much you are going to have a tough time seeing where you are hitting at what would be considered normal long range distances. If you can't see where you are hitting then you don't know how to correct for the shot.

FYI, the majority of top tactical shooters are using 6mm or 6.5mm for their low recoil and good ballistics with high BC bullets.

Now for ELR shooting 300RUM with Berger 230's or Hornady 225's would be a great choice.

Re: 300RUM opinions

thank you for the input.

i shoot my win mag now and dont have much trouble spotting my misses as it sits now. the recoil was a concern of mine and you have doubled up my thinking on this.

at some point i do want to change to a 6.5 creedmoor or something of the nature when finances allow it. as for now i think i will stick with the 300 and just have it accurized as best i can with the blueprint.

If finances are a concern, I wouldn't recommend the 300RUM. It is a very expensive cartridge. It consumes a lot of powder and the barrel will live a short life.

Whether or not the 300WM or 300RUM are suitable cartridges for your "tactical" use depends on the matches you go to. If they are slower paced and have a lot of targets at 1000 and beyond, the big 30's make sense. However, if they are like most of the matches I've been too, the 1000 yard shot is RARE, with most targets being between 300 and 700 yards. The matches I've been to have also been very fast paced, and recovering from the heavy recoil of a big 30 would have taken up precious time - with little benefit because again, at the ranges I've seen, a 260 or similar handles the range just fine.

Re: 300RUM opinions

Did he quote you a price of 200 or 2000?? Beyond anything else, one would be way to low and the other way to high for a re-chamber and truing

Re: 300RUM opinions

25 grains more powder, more recoil, more muzle blast, shorter barrel life, all for maybe 100-125fps. Compare that on a ballistic calculator, its small. Not worth it in my book, but if its worth it to you thats what matters. Good luck!

It will be well worth it for the smith - he can do the work twice as often with the RUM

Re: 300RUM opinions

If you like tipping Elk over at long range like my Son and I do then get it. It's also great for busting rocks, makes small ones out of large ones. Just my .02

Re: 300RUM opinions

I really like the 300 RUM, but in your case I would stick with the 300 win. Spend the money on more powder and bullets for the win mag.

The 300 RUM is FUBAR idea executed extremely poorly. I know of no one that thinks the 300 RUM brass and inherent accuracy of the cartridge are worth a crap. Like it or not, the .300 Win Mag is the de facto standard for 30 caliber magnum tactical shooting. If you really just have to shoot farther, go .338, .375 or .50 BMG.

Re: 300RUM opinions

thank you all for the advice, he has the job in at 200$ or less and thats a quote. he is a friend of mine and i know he does good work considering i have seen his rifles shoot and they shoot well so im not so sure why the low price, maybe doing me a favor possibly.

after all the input here i will stay with the win mag. my gut moreless told me the same when he was selling me on the RUM earlier. but i was listening to him since my experience is minimal with anything bigger than the win mag.

once again thank you all for making my decision much easier. and also the fact that i have around 300 pieces of once fired brass for the win mag to load.

Re: 300RUM opinions

If you are planning to shoot heavy .30 cal bullets (like the 230gr bergers) you may not find that you get much more velocity out of a 300 RUM over the 300 Win Mag.

At least not enough to merit the extra recoil, powder, wear and tear on you and the gun ...

You will see bigger difference in lighter bullets (165 and 180gr).

Rule of thumb: "Use a big case for shooting lighter bullets and a smaller case for shooting heavy bullets."
