have been looking at a few diffrent stock companies and I was wanting to see what you guys would suggest for my Rem. 700 SPS Varmint in .243 I primarily use this rifle for calling coyotes and bench shooting. I would like a stock thats not too heavy so I can get threw the woods with it fairly easily but I also want something accurate. The two stocks I have been looking are the HS Precision Remington 700, Police, Short Action, BDL, Varmint Barrel Contour and the Bell and Carlson Light Tactical. Im completly open to everyones opinion about these two stocks and other you think you would be a good choice. This is my first Rem. 700 so Im not really aware of whats out there for this rifle.

Thanks alot,
Ryan

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

Im in same boat as you. I have the 700 SPS 26" HB in .308, and at first, was just gonna put a detach mag on it. But, after realizing how much the stock sucks ass, gonna swap it out.

Ive become pretty good friends with a couple guys here on teh hide, and they both suggested:

Bell & Carson, the M40 copy..it's affordable, and a nice piece.

I can't say that is the direction I am going, but I am leaning that way...

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

Started out with the same rifle. While you can fiddle around with that factory stock and get the gun to shoot reasonable, replacing the stock altogther will make a big difference. I noticed it most with consistency. Converting the stock made the grouping much more consistent. Of the two choices that you listed, I would without heistation pick the B&C. I prefer the A3 tactical and it would probably fit your requirements a bit better if you are interested in mobility. I have nothing against the HS, and basically have the same stock on a Sendero. Personally the ergonomics and fit of the B&C are better for me. See if you can shoulder a few and see which one you like the best.

Been looking at that stock for my Varmint also. How much did it increase the weight? Do you hunt with it?

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

I have an LTR with the HS Precision stock
it's "OK", I mean, I am shooting .5" at 300 yards with 165 Accubond handloads.. but I don't really like the stock from an ergonomics point of view for hunting.

My favorite stocks are old Sakos, they just feel right..
I am probably going to get a Manners Ultralight for it after talking with Tom yesterday

That is a link to that B&C...it's on sale for 2011..So, for smidge over $200 for black (little more if you want camo, or different colors).
More I look at it, more I like it.

A previous thread about the new M40 Style.

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthre...554#Post2316554

I have one here behind my desk waiting to do the writeup.

I do like the Light Tactical and run it on my other 700, but the M40 has a higher comb and should work better without building up a cheek pad.

The chassis and construction of the M40 and the Light Tactical are almost exactly the same. The M40 just has a little more of the bedding block ahead of the recoil lug.

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

Never weighed it with factory stock. It weighs in around 11lbs loaded. I do hunt with it. It's taken mule deer, antelope, and elk out to 600yds.

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

I just put an HS take off stock off a 5r on mine today and like it, grip is a little large with double palm swell but the stock isnt that heavy and feels good. The only downside is the comb is a little low. Got another sps varmint 17fireball in a stocky's thumbhole lam stock and I like it a lot.

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

Ended up going with this HS precision stock and my groups tightened up significantly.

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

Thanks, next up will be a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50.

I'm trying to get up to a 100 posts so I can list this Nikon Monarch up for sale on here.

I also need a bi-pod. Anybody know where I can find a Harris BRMS at for a decent price? Is there a site I can purchase one from that offers a hide discount?

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

This spring I bought a S-BRM on Amazon that ended up being cheaper than anyplace else I could find online.

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

Found one on there for $95.50. Notched legs & 6-9", I don't know if its gets any better than that.
