Hey guys,

I'm just curious what bullet weight you would choose for whitetail. I'm between Berger and A-max but leaning toward A-max cause the TAP ammo shoots well in my SPR.

Most shots inside 150yds so I'm thinking 155's, let me have your opinions.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Amax and don't look back. 155's will tear their inside out which is a good thing. Behind the shoulder shots will normally exit. Shoulder shots will not but it will always drop them like a sack of s**t!

Re: 155gr or 168gr .308 for whitetail

Berger VLD hunting bullets and Amax's perform pretty much identical for me. Jared's description is right on. Amax's are easier to load with and not as finicky with seat depth and for that reason if I was going factory it would be Amax's. A factory load generic seating depth Amax is more likely to shoot good in more rifles than a VLD without the benefit of loading your own and tuning the seat.

Re: 155gr or 168gr .308 for whitetail

Amax's it is then.

Would you go 155 or 168gr or just load some of both and see which shoots the best?

Thanks,
Jeremy

I shoot the 168's becasue they just shoot really well out of my rifle.

Shoot them both for groups and go from there.

Re: 155gr or 168gr .308 for whitetail

I am going to go with 155 Scenars! They are hammers in my gun, so what really counts is where the bullet is put IMHO.

^^^ this ^^^ in the situation you've described, the deer won't notice the difference between the 155 and 168.

Re: 155gr or 168gr .308 for whitetail

Whatever shoots best. 55g has served me well for the majority of whitetail taken in my life. Whitetail aren't hard to kill...

Re: 155gr or 168gr .308 for whitetail

I shot a whitetail last year with a 178 Amax in my .308, boom flop. My son shot a mulie buck with a 165 Ballistic Tip a few years back in the same rifle, and it worked just fine. Feed your gun what it likes, place the bullet where it should go, and any of the normal bullet weights will work just fine. Shoot one through the guts, regardless of caliber, and you'll .... be sorry/disappointed if you should happen to recover the animal.

Inside 150 yds? Why not jus go to walmart and buy whatevers cheap?

I did for opening weekend but I want to load for it anyway. Once I find a good load I'll probably shoot it the majority of the time anyway.

I'm going to order a few different bullets and start some load development. I just started shooting rifles but I'll load for hunting first then maybe squeeze some accuracy out for paper later.

Inside 150 yards? Seriously does not matter. Whatever you shoot best. Inside 150 yards you might even do better with a round nose like Sierra 2130 or the 2135.

Inside 150 yards a 165 gr. Sierra Game King spire point boattail. I'd run it out to 400. Other than the Game King a 178 A-max on top of 44 to 45 gr. of Varget. That I'd run to 500 yards on a whitetail, sky's the limit on a hog.

Excellent option at any range inside 600, imho. I like these a lot via .308 Win.

Re: 155gr or 168gr .308 for whitetail

I dropped this one two years ago with a Hornady 155 Grain SST round. Hit it like a sledge hammer at 150 yards. Buck stumbled about five feet and wrapped up in a dead fall.

I'm using the 168 A-max this year to try some longer shots.

Re: 155gr or 168gr .308 for whitetail

The 155 and 168 berger both shoot well out of my rifle however I do not like there performance on our deer (South Carolina). Our deer are pretty small and the Berger bullets just pass through with little damage. 5 of the deer I recovered had pencil hole entry and exit through the lungs. I have since gone to the 165 deep curl which drops them in their tracks. The same 165 berger in the 30-06 is very destructive and drops them in their tracks.

Re: 155gr or 168gr .308 for whitetail

inside 150 I drive the 130 TTSX as fast as possible...over 3000

considering the 110 TTSX if I could get it sub MOA @ 3300-3400, but havent tried it yet

Re: 155gr or 168gr .308 for whitetail

155 Scenars, with velocity behind them, hit quite hard.

Re: 155gr or 168gr .308 for whitetail

I use 165gr SST now. We'll see how they perform here in two weeks when the season starts here in PA.

Wish me luck!

Re: 155gr or 168gr .308 for whitetail

155 AMAX is all I've used in the last 5 years. No tracking required.

I dropped two nice meat hogs at 464yds and 215yds last week again no tracking required.
