My club (BCGC) has a 600 yard range, but I am looking for something 1000 yards and more for a .338 LM. Does not have to be a range, but it would be nice if we could take a Jeep most of the way to the targets. We live in Conifer, about 30 miles SW of Denver.

Re: 1000 yard plus in North central Colorado?

Chaffee County range goes ot to 1020-yards, and has some various pieces of steel. It's a State range, so it's free. They don't allow 50BMG.

Re: 1000 yard plus in North central Colorado?

CRC goes to 1000 and its pretty good bang for the buck but its busy on the weekends.

Re: 1000 yard plus in North central Colorado?

Can you give me any directions to the Chaffee County Range?

(The range near Bailey is my club, the Buffalo Creek Gun Club, www.bcgc.com and has a max 600 yard range which is really nice.)

Found the Chaffee range online. Says it goes to 400+ yards, and the plus sign is encouraging but not very definitive.

Re: 1000 yard plus in North central Colorado?

It'd be a hell of drive, but you could always take a trip up to Pawnee and stretch the legs of that .338lm of yours.

I've shot out to a mile up there with my .308. 14 shots and not one of'em hit, lmao!

They have a good amount of steel targets sized from full-size deer and bear to smaller P-dogs, plus a few discs and so forth from 300 to 550-yards. Then they have some P-dogs and small discs at around 620-yards. After that there's a big jump out to 1020-yards with a 14" square, 10" disc, and a P-dog. There may be a couple small targets at 850, can't remember now? They also have large wood 4' x 8' backers to place paper targets on, from what I recall, those are at 50, 100, 200, and 500-yards.

All this is on the larger rifle range. They also have two seperate rifle/pistol ranges that are at 100-yards and 200-yards.

Altitude there is 7200-ft ASL

The P-dog at 1020-yards is a real challenge, more so when the wind is moving your bullet.

Re: 1000 yard plus in North central Colorado?

It wasn't posted anything about a 50bmg the last time I was there. Where are you getting that from?

Re: 1000 yard plus in North central Colorado?

Welcome to join me sometime. Unlimited range and not a soul in sight (save a few cows, p-dogs, and speed goats).

They had a sign up last Spring/Summer about a hearing date regarding the prohibiting of 50BMG's and Full-Auto at all State of Colorado operated ranges because idiots were shooting at and destroying range posts, signs, and other equipment. Some people also thought it was a safety issue. Last word I got was the measure passed, and thus 50BMG's are prohibited.

A few people had to ruin it for all of us, and probably the same idiots who shoot bottles, micro-wave ovens, old TV sets, etc, and expect someone else to clean up their mess.

Re: 1000 yard plus in North central Colorado?

I have been to the bcgc and its really nice, but small. The Colorado Rifle Club (as someone pointed out) has a 1000 yard High Power range, and last weekend there was 1-2 people there on Sunday. It was pretty quiet all around. The Shutzen range is closed down now so the Silhouette range is getting a lot more traffic where they have steel up to 500M. I can highly recommend CRC for an inexpensive club thats not too busy.

However National Forest/BLM is free and you can be pretty much assured no-one else will be around. Just gotta find a spot.

I'd like to know where that I-70 spot is ^^^

Re: 1000 yard plus in North central Colorado?

Before you guys get too excited I felt I should explain the spot a bit better. First, it is a half hour drive to the trail head from my house in Westminster. Then its nine miles up a slow going, non intensive off road trail which adds another 45 minutes to get up there. Second, and as you can probably assume, this spot is not accessable all season, even in early winter. Lastly, there is a good bit of walking involved to get your targets to location. The trail pictured can get you down range but you must walk The target into the valley to ensure safe shooting. if you are still interested I'd be happy to show you where it is come next spring.

For those of you who don't want to wait ill give you a clue. Get on Google earth and do some poking around in clear creek county. The trail head is very close to I70. This is how I discovered this location.

HA!
I had a feeling it was in the area.. right on Brother! I use to ride my crotch rocket up in the area (Squaw Pass)and wondered, and I've ventured Google maps many times seeking for a nice spot like one you've taken a pic of. I know some people that have shot up there through another forum I frequent on (CO-AR15)
Very nice... I may have to check this place out when it starts warming up... Spring time maybe:)

Re: 1000 yard plus in North central Colorado?

The Marxbury Gulch area in the Pike NF outside of Jefferson (down the 77 Road) is a good make your own range place. Just gotta be careful during hunting season because of the elk and deer hunters roaming around.

Grab your Gazetteer, take a left out of Jefferson off 285, follow it down past the Terryall reservoir, past the town of Terryall. When the road starts to open up some start watching for signs and a FR on your right. If you cross the cattle guard going across 77 road, you went 100 feet too far.

That's fine.... thanks anyway.
Just nice to know where some of these places are up in the mountains for long range shooting.
