Subsonic .22 Ammo

I was told that subsonic ammo is more accurate than standard .22's. Is it because of the heavier bullet or did I hear wrong altogether. Joe

Re: Subsonic .22 Ammo

Welcome to The Hide Joe. (just a heads up you should highly consider fully filling out your profile..)

But on to your question. From what I've read the heavier .22 projectiles (i.e. 60gr's from Aguila SSS) have a difficult time stabilizing in factory barrels because of the slower twist rate.

however, I have also read that the subsonic .22 ammo isn't really "more accurate" especially at closer ranges. But as you stretch the legs of the .22LR the supersonic rounds become transonic and lose stability, thus losing accuracy at longer ranges. Since subsonic rounds don't have to go through a transonic transition they will be less likely to lose stability at longer ranges, thus being more consistent.

Re: Subsonic .22 Ammo

Thanks, I just started shooting my .22 again after 40 years. Grandkids. All the reloading I do for my centerfire rifles it's good to just grab a box of .22's and take the grandson shooting. Then to hear I'm using the wrong ammo, well this worked 40 years ago. Joe

Re: Subsonic .22 Ammo

does not take much distance for a 22 to go trans sonic - can be under 50 yds

all of the match type ammo starts out subsonic

for common bulk ammo I would rate

1) CCI blazer
2) federal
3) win
4) rem

Re: Subsonic .22 Ammo

This is the reason I love this forum, everyone gives great advice. I think what I'll do is buy a few boxes of different ammo and shoot it. This way I'll see what the gun likes. The grandson likes shooting it at 50 yards but I like 100. We'll make a game to see what the gun likes between the two yardages. Thanks for all your help guys. Joe

Re: Subsonic .22 Ammo

I've had very good results with Winchester SuperX subsonic .22 ammunition. All I've ever tried was the off the shelf stuff like CCI, Remington, and Winchester so my knowledge is limited. However, I have no reason to look further. The Winchester feeds and cycles in all of my .22's and holds amazingly tight groups out of my AR's (chambered in 5.56 with a .22 conversion) at 50yds. It groups so well, that I scratched a dedicated .22 upper off the shopping list.

Re: Subsonic .22 Ammo

I've worked with Win, fiochi, CCI, Aquila and probably a bunch more I've forgotten. In My 10/22 set up for 60 gr Aquila, AWESOME. Lately same for the Fiochi & Win. It all depends on the weapon. Now my 22LR for my Sig P220 conversion doesn't like some... best you can do is try what you can afford and settle on a happy medium.

Re: Subsonic .22 Ammo

CCI standard seems to excel in just about everything (and it's a sub-sonic). Really not much more expensive than bulk stuff (if you buy it in bulk).

Re: Subsonic .22 Ammo

I just tried out Remington subsonic in my 10/22 (with factory barrel). Quickly dialed the scope in at 25yds and it puts them in one hole.
My rifle likes it, although I would rather have a clad bullet.

Re: Subsonic .22 Ammo

much like the above posts, it is common that one ammo that is fantastic in one rifle (even the same manufacture and model) seemingly does not work as well in another. best thing is to invest in many ammos up front, test them at different distances, and pick the one that works the best for what you can afford and buy a whole bunch of it.

remember the stuff that works great at 25 & 50 yards may not work as well further out as stuff that didn't work as well at the shorter ranges.

so also pick an ammo that performs at the distances you'll mostly be shooting at the most, or if shooting multiple distances, gives you the best consistancy throughout ALL those ranges.

Also as mentioned before, the subsonic / match / standard velocities do not go through a transonic change keeping the bullet more stable from 0 to infinity distances which contribute to it's accuracy / consistancy vs. high velocity.

depending on temp, altitude, etc. and shooting shorter ranges, there are bulk high velocity rounds (CCI Blazer for example) that performs as well as "higher regarded ammos" in the subsonic catagory.

remember that match / standard velocity ammos are technically subsonic as they are generally under the speed of sound throughout their flight.

so yes in general terms, subsonic ammos are more consistant.

Re: Subsonic .22 Ammo

Shoot what works best in your rifle.

Subsonic is generally a little more accurate due to stabilization issues.

I have had good luck with CCI Standard Velocity and my rifle really likes Wolf Match.

Re: Subsonic .22 Ammo

In my TR the remington sub sonics did not do as well as CCI Blazer at any distance up to 300yds. CCI Blazer does almost as good as Wolf but at a fraction of a cost so unless I'm really trying to show someone what the "little" .22 will do I try to use Blazer because it's been the best all around round for my gun. Hope it helps

Re: Subsonic .22 Ammo

I'll also give the Rem. Subsonic a big +1. They shoot good in most of my rifles and pistols. In my target rifle it does very well for the money with the next best I found being the FGMM 922A load. Put the Rem sub's are right in there with the FGMM if I could get the 4 or 5 fliers out of the box.
