Ok I hope I’m posting this in the right place, I searched before I posted and don’t see an old thread on this... My question:

I just got a Windrunner, I am looking to break in the barrel with M33 ball ammo and have some fun plinking. Once I get serious ill be using A-max but I want to save some $$ and get a few down range before then. So is there a big difference between types M33? I have found some linked for pretty cheap but I can’t tell what brand the brass is. Other similar like L.C. that cost more. Is there any type of M33 I should try to stay away from? I have heard a lot of people talking about having to beat the bolt open, because of improperly sized surplus rounds.

In summary what type of .50 cal surplus should I look for OR avoid?

Thanks for the help and take it easy on me, it’s my 1st post!

Re: EDM Windrunner Ammo Selection

The Chinese shit is junk. Spend the money and get some LC, IMI, IVI headstamp stuff. What you will find is that you will now have some good brass for reloading and or to sell as once fired. I personally prefer the 690 AP for reloading. It is VERY accurate for surplus. What you will find is normal production .50 is pretty bad when it comes to accuracy because of the large powder range spec to give better dispersion. If you collet pull and remeasure powder accurately your accuracy will increase a butt-load.

Re: EDM Windrunner Ammo Selection

Any news on what you have shot? I've read that you need to be careful with surplus and the windrunner do to the tight tolerances and near match specs. I have one on order that's shipping in the next few days and had a a lot of xm33c, PMC, and HSM ammo. I'm worried about the XM33c and PMC being hot/getting stuck in the chamber.

Re: EDM Windrunner Ammo Selection

The American Eagle M33 was really hard to extract in mine. Sometimes got stuck. Use something with Winchester brass like HSM and you will be good to go.

How were you finally ever able to eject it?

Re: EDM Windrunner Ammo Selection

Cleaning rod on some.

Ive had a few different 50's that had a hard time with the AE ammo

Re: EDM Windrunner Ammo Selection

Did windrunner come with the case?

I had to purchase my hard case. It is very nice but was a little pricey.

Re: EDM Windrunner Ammo Selection

Ok well...
So far i have only shot various ball ammo:

IK= Yugoslavian ammo I was not happy with at all.
Lake City 83 and LC 88 have been good
Talon surplus has been good.
CBC has been good.

This being said I’ve just been plinking; I finally got done with the barrel break in process. Now i can actually start working on getting accurate. I had issues with the IK brass getting stuck inside the chamber. (As someone else mentioned I had to use a cleaning rod to get it out) I will not be firing any more of this ammo.

Case I don’t have a hard case yet but I will be getting one soon. It will be a pelican with custom foam; I’m not personally a fan of the EDM hard case for various reasons.

I got a soft case from EDM. I am generally happy with it.

PROS:
Compact
Heavy duty zippers
Nice heavy material
Well padded
Nice pockets
Padded sleeve to protect the barrel

Cons:
Really tight fit especially on the scope and my night force won’t fit with the sunshade on. So I had to remove it.
I think that the sling/strap clips on the case are too light weight.
The carry handle on the case is on the opposite side of the zipper. This means that when carrying the bag by the handle the entire length of the zipper is pointed at the ground and the weight of everything in the case is against the zipper. Also the receiver is upside down when carrying, this means all the weight is on the scope and is held in only by aforementioned zipper... So in short if you drop the case it lands on the scope... or if the zipper fails it will fall to the ground scope first.

A picture would probably put this into perspective. If I’m not clearly explaining this let me know I can post some.

NOTE: YES it is a little pricy but I like it and would buy it again, I haven’t found anything better... It could just be improved I think. It's nothing that a good seamstress cant handle

Re: EDM Windrunner Ammo Selection

I buy my bulk manufactured stuff from Pats Reloading since Talon lost the remanufacturing of .50 BMG.
There was some real junk floating around! Pats ammo shoots pretty darn good. I have no complaints.

I would collect up LC brass IMO. I have just had good luck with it.
Also, Lapua offers 750 and 800 GRN projo's, Barnes has 647 grn hunting projo's.

Re: EDM Windrunner Ammo Selection

Thanks for the case information. Which pelican case will fit nice with the m96? I just purchased the rifle and will be waiting for shipment.

Re: EDM Windrunner Ammo Selection

I am still researching which case to get... I just got a 1720 for my .308 and it is barely too small for the m96. Another consideration is that I have the .50 and a .408 bolt and barrel conversion. I want it to all fit into one hard case. Do plan on getting any of the conversions? Or are you going to stick to one caliber?

Re: EDM Windrunner Ammo Selection

Wow, thats the coolest set up i have seen. Nice!
