Wanting to put a brake on my 6.5 Creedmoor. I was curious as to what thread would be suggest to use to minimize the distortion and affect on the end of the barrel. In stock form at 26" long my criterion barrel is a heavy varmit contour and measures .815". If I plan on cutting the barrel down at the time of muzzle brake install to 20-22" and the diameter will be in the area of .875".

What diameter and pitch thread would you guys suggest for this? I plan on running a suppressor later this year as well once I get all my ducks in a row. Just in case that changes which thread you would suggest.

Re: 6.5 creedmoor brake

My 20 inch Criterion 6.5CM barrel arrives today with 5/8x24 threads on it from the factory.

Where did you source the 26 incher from?

Re: 6.5 creedmoor brake

Put a surefire on it, then you can add the can later, for the maximum shootin' enjoyment!

Mmmmm, a 6.5 CM doesn't need much brake, maybe just go straight to the can?

Re: 6.5 creedmoor brake

Hey I got it from Northland Shooters Supply....20" from the factory huh? Wanna Trade?

Re: 6.5 creedmoor brake

Yeah Ive considered surefires also...just havent researched cans enough to know if thats the route Id be going....I just like the looks of a bastard or ross brake seamlessly installed. I figured even if it doesnt really need a brake the least recoil possible would only improve shot tracking.

Re: 6.5 creedmoor brake

I have a ross brake installed on my 260 and the thing is like shooting a 223. It is so fun to shoot just very loud.

Re: 6.5 creedmoor brake

So if I went with a sure fire brake for this gun what caliber would be best? Get a .223 and have it opened up or just use a stock 6.8?

The 5.56mm brakes are typically 1/2-28thd. Get the 6.8mm brake, it's already threaded 5/8-24thd. Oversize 0.3mm is going to be totally insignificant.

why would 7.62mm opening be better than 6.8mm on a 6.5 mm gun?

Re: 6.5 creedmoor brake

I can tell you from personal experience to get an oversized hole in the brake. If you, or someone you know in this case, hits the brake against something... BULLET STRIKE!! It isn't a pretty situation.

A 30cal brake will do basically the same job on recoil reduction, and will possibly be slightly quieter (use hearing protection anyways) to the shooter. By design, like a suppressor, the tighter the tolerance, the more effective it will be. However, the Creed already is sweet on the recoil impulse, so you will not really even notice the difference.

Re: 6.5 creedmoor brake

Wow how hard did that brake get hit?! I know they open them up slightly larger than caliber but good grief that must have been a hell of a hit to knock it off enough to cause a baffle strike. I just cant imagine that Id want a brake 1.12mm larger than the bullet Im shooting. I thought they only opened brakes up to only a few thou' larger than the caliber?

Re: 6.5 creedmoor brake

And your right about the sweetness of the recoil...Im mainly only putting a brake on for a suppressor later otherwise it wouldn't be getting one.

Re: 6.5 creedmoor brake

I have a 6.5CM being chambered and threaded for a brake and am in a similar perdicament I have a 5/8" brake but want to use a smaller brake but it only comes in a 9/16" thread. Is there any down side to 9/16" on 6.5 mm other than availability of replacements?

Re: 6.5 creedmoor brake

Just an opinion, but who really cares about noise if you are wearing protection anyways. I understand in a hunting situation, one shot all day case. If you're shooting targets all day from a center fire rifle, then I would assume you're wearing protection. Does the Creedmoor need a brake? Not really, but I have one on mine, and it makes difference. I get to watch bullet impacts on target. 5/8-24 is great because if and when you get a can, that's what most have for threads. Surefire makes a great product, but too costly for my pocket, even at dealer cost. I run a dedicated TB 30-P1, and super happy with it. BTW, the can make the rifles recoil feel like its shooting with the brake, only no noise. Cool as shit when you shoot the rocks at the local range instead of the paper, and you can hear the impact of the bullets on the rocks. Plus it's like hitting a can full of talc powder.

What brake and what caliber is it opened up to?

Re: 6.5 creedmoor brake

I run APA brakes on all my rifles, and the TB can is for 30 cal which works great on the 6.5 bullets also. I have tried the can on my 300 Win Mag, 308, 260, and my 6.5 Creed. Worked great on all of them. Now it's dedicated to the 260.

Re: 6.5 creedmoor brake

Each brake is opened to its specific caliber with a Dave Manson muzzle brake reamer. Can't remember off hand, but I think it's .030 over bullet size.
