My father and I took the new build out to get it sighted in. Match 24" stainless barrel with .223 Wylde chamber and 1-8" twist. We were using Hornady practice rounds, kept the brass. Anyway, now that we've got some empty cases I was hoping for some load suggestions with either RL-19, 4895 or 4350, CCI 200, and 75gr Amax. Anyone got some pet loads they'd like to toss my way?

I was considering working up a load doing something like this:

75gr Hornady Amax
22-26gr H4895
CCI 200 Primers
Hornady Brass

Re: Pet Load Suggestions

FYI, Hornady 75gr AMAX won't load short enough to fit into an AR magazine. You want Hornady 75gr HPBT, 77gr SMK/Nosler CC, or shorter if you want to use your magazines. Of the powders you mentioned, only H4895 is compatible with the .223 Remington. The others are too slow.

Re: Pet Load Suggestions

Ditto on the 75 AMAX. Make sure if you use hornaday you use the HPBT rounds. Not sure on the powders.

Re: Pet Load Suggestions

I think you mean CCI 400 primers.... 200's are large primers.

H4895 is your best choice for the said load.

Interesting. So the Amax's are too long? Anybody want a box of Amax's? LMAO. Or have a box of the HPBT's for trade?

Yep, the keys on my phone are so close together. Consider that a typo. CCI 400's. And yep, already planning on using the H4895 (as can be noted from my including it in the original post.)
Thanks guys, for the info.

Re: Pet Load Suggestions

SMK 69 or 77 and Varget is a good combination. 4895 will work well for lighter bullets and ball plinking loads. The other two are way too slow for .223.

Re: Pet Load Suggestions

If you would consider changing powders, my all time favorite load, is
Win Or LC case, Wolf primer, 77 grain SMK, 24 grains Ramshot TAC seat to mag length. Make sure you have enough neck tension if not crimping, which I do not.

Re: Pet Load Suggestions

Well, I was hoping to use something I already had available. But I might be open to other powders, primers and bullets, if you could give me the reasoning behind your choice. What your experience has been with them, and whether they do great in a 24" 1-8" twist.

If you have something to support the choice, you could give me loads that have worked amazing for you and I might give it a shot. (Pun intended)

Re: Pet Load Suggestions

OK,
I shoot my Tac load in both 7 and 8 twist to 800 M and get great accuracy. Rifles are HCS SPR and a Les Baer. Accuracy is amazing. Load holds up well in cold weather and is fine in hot. -10-100+. TAC drops through the measure exactly each time. Load kills well.

Re: Pet Load Suggestions

yep. yields great MV (26.2 @ 2900+fps with 69 smks) and meters very well (ball powder).

I worked most of the powders you tried and projos from 52 to 69 grains. Surprisingly the bullet powder combo that shot best in my Colt 6724 was 26.2 grains of W748 and a 52 grain SMK. 5 shot groups were consistently around 0.5" @ 100 yards. In my Noveske Afghan N4 VIS the same load was almost as good usually 4 shots around 0.6 moa with 1 flyer that opened the groups up to 0.75 moa.

Re: Pet Load Suggestions

I was hoping to stay with the heavy projectiles, like 69gr and higher. Has anyone coated 77gr SMK's with HBN and worked up a load using either the CFE 223, TAC or 4895?

Re: Pet Load Suggestions

Thanks everyone! The .223 is a new round to me and I've done plenty of research but it never hurts to ask for more advice from the experts.
