Here's the background. My 14 year old daughter has asked for a rifle. Although I have an AR lower with nothing on it, she likes the looks of bolt rifles. Her .22 is a bolt action Savage so that's what we're going to stick with. Looks like for the money, the Savage model 11 Hog Hunter in .223. Medium heavy barrel, sights and a threaded barrel, accutrigger. By all accounts it's an accurate rifle. I'll paint the stock for her

So now we need some glass. Price is a consideration. I'm thinking about the Bushnell 3200 10x40 in some quick release rings. Maybe a used Vortex Viper 3-9x40 BDC.

Input is welcome.

Re: Glass for daughter's first bolt gun.

Range only rifle or hunting?
Range rifle: fixed 10x (those bushnells are hard to beat for $199 at Midway)
Hunting: 3-9x

Re: Glass for daughter's first bolt gun.

I just picked up a used Nikon Monarch 3.3-10x44 with a mildot and adjustable objective... hard to beat for 185 bucks! I got a good deal, but what Im getting at is I think the monarchs are hard to beat for the price. Especially used. Also Vortex makes great stuff and a great warranty.

Re: Glass for daughter's first bolt gun.

I am a firm beliver in learning the basics first, including iron site use, hence I do not start kids with scopes.

That said, the higher the power ther more limited the field of view and eye relief becomes less foregiving.

I'd say 3-9 or such before I'd use a fixed 10x.

Just my thoughts, for what that's worth. Add a few dollars and you may get a drink somewhere....

Re: Glass for daughter's first bolt gun.

I have a .223 Stevens for my niece. She had a hard time finding a good site picture with the bushnell fixed 10x40. I put a weaver 3-10x40 mil/mil on it and she loves it. I have even starting teaching her how to range with the reticle and dope the scope. It's a fine teaching scope.

Re: Glass for daughter's first bolt gun.

Good stuff guys. She loves to shoot and is a good shot. I'll check on that Monarch and the Weaver.
