Ok guys next month my Christmas present to myself is to get into reloading. I have a buddy about 35 minutes away that is going to teach me all the ins and outs. I am collecting piece by piece my reloading components. Right now I have about 500 pieces of mostly 1x fired brass. So I have that part down, now I just need primers, powder and bullets.

My gun is a 16" REPR that has a Vortex 1-6x on top, so I am limited to about 600 or so yards maybe a bit further once I master the gun/glass. I dont need super accurate ammo but will load hot though. What primers, bullets and powder should I go with? This is for steel right now but will be loading rounds for Hog sometime next year. Thanks in advance!

Re: What load for LWRC REPR?

Killzone, best thing for you to do, IMHO, is work that load yourself and find what YOUR AR likes, very safely & carefully.

I (my .308 AR 16") likes Hornady Amax 168/178, Varget, H4895, IMR 4064.
I'm thick with this stuff and it works for my LR. It's my belief that these particulars will work great for you too, as they do for most everyone loading .308, as far as I can tell.

Most of time all this has been used with Winchester brass. But now I have hundreds & hundreds of once fired Hornady .308 Match brass that a guy & his friends shoot and then sell empties too me cheap, they don't reload. I have 500 more coming next week from them, they look almost new after I ultrasonic and size them.
So that's maybe some advise to find yourself a source like that, or you can buy once fired online for cheap. Just have to keep looking for it, Google search whatever.

I will probably continue to buy used brass online, I picked up about 350ish pieces from another 'Hide member to go with my 160ish 1x fired pieces. Just need to get powder, primers and bullets then work up a load. Pretty excited to start loading for cheap to shoot often.

Thanks, I will order up a bunch of each.

Re: What load for LWRC REPR?

178 amax over 44.5 gns varget is about the best I found for my repr. Just do not set your hopes too high. These are not precision rifles and they will never produce results close to a decent bolt rifle...nor a well made DI.

I do not expect it to be a precision rifle, I just want a good load to shoot out to 6-700 yards with decent accuracy. I plan on shooting a lot so that is why I am re-loading.

Re: What load for LWRC REPR?

Do I need large or small rifle primers? Does that depend on what the brass is designed for or will all 308 brass use small? I have about 100 rds of Lapua, and the rest are Win, FC, etc.

Last time I shot 100 yards it was 168 Amax, Hornady brass, CCI BR2 primers & 43 gn Varget that gave me some .5" five shot groups. If it wasn't for cold bore every first shot of the groups it would have been better I think. I let barrel cool for 5 minutes at least between groups. The last group was best, last 4 shots made .375", 1st shot made it go to .5" and it would have been worse if I wasn't expecting that so I compensated for it with the reticle, but just barely not quite enough. With 16" barrel, chrono'd average velocity of 25 shots was 2450.
I made up some hotter loads for OCW testing, want to get to the faster accuracy node.
