Okay heres the deal 5 shots 200 yards 8" gong in 30 seconds or less?! Can it be done? With a savage mkII.... This will be my weekend project? Do you think I can do it??

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

You ever shoot paper at that distance? Should be a piece of cake. I expect to hold <2 MOA. A challenge for me would be to put 5 shots on a 4" steel @ 200.

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

After proper sight in with a decent rest? No problem.

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

You never mention anything about hitting the target:) so yes, I think either way you should be able to.

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

Yeah you can, I use a 4" @ 200 with my Savage Mark II BTV.

What ammo do you have? I've found the CCI Target 40gr RN 1,070 fps to work best in that type 22.

I could do it with a 10/22 carbine factory unmodified wearing a tasco 4x shooting Remington T-bolts...while looking in a mirror and resting the gun over my shoulder. YMMV.

Seriously though, this isn't close to pushing the accuracy limitations. As Nike says, "Simplemente hazlo!" (Just do it!)

ETA: Buy better ammo. Fed is about the worst of the bulks lately in my experience. Go Winchester Xpert or 555, or Blazer. Anything but Remington or Federal.

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

I'd dare say I could come close with my 22/45 with optimum wind and ammo conditions.... I might be delusional though

But yeah, just about any decent .22 bolt rifle should be able to handle that.

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

I'm shooting CCI standard. Im zeroed at 50 took 27 moa to get on at 200 but I ran out at 26 moa in my scope. Aliitle Kentucky windage and I was on, but I didt do any speed shooting. I might put my Bushnell tactical on shoot with that. He rectical has been awesome for (me) an practice with the .22 of all the shooting I love a windy gusty day to play. If the wind is blowing 10-15 and I can get a hit it much more fun...

You running a mildot reticle now? Easy fix to give you an exact aiming point in your reticle is to adjust so that your shots strike exactly 1 mil low of your crosshairs @ 200 and just use that. I've done that several times with subsonics @ longer ranges.

It's whatever puts a smile on your face though.

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

lol hell yes... If you can keep settled enough behind the bolt, the rifle is more than capable... As others have said, go smaller on the gong. 6 seconds apiece is almost too much time for those shots, you start thinking about it too much.

Happily, if you fail, rimfire is cheap, keep trying

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

Since you mentioned doing this with a Savage, absolutely!!

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

In a good breeze and you can't read it..........absolutely not.

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

8" is WAY too big unless you are shooting off hand. I like 8" off hand at 200 yards.
If you are using a bipod or rested, go 3-4 inches.

I would be very surprised if you couldn't do it.

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

This took longer than 30 sec with a Savage TRR-SR. However, should give you some idea of accuracy w/ a MKII. This is 330 yards, considerably farther than 200 yards for a .22. If I recall, the drop was around 140".

I marked the target wrong as I was shooting Green Tag at 100 before this. For 330 yards, I use CCI Blazer. Personally, I would not use a subsonic round anything over 100 yards as hypersonic is already sub at 100Y and subsonic is going to have so much drop, you may not be able to hold over or dial enough for the shot. Just my $.02.

200 yards should not be a problem at all w/ a MKII, maybe even in 30 sec.

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

No I'm not. I tried w/ lower velocty and there is way too much drop. You run out of field of vision in the scope.
I'm specifically speaking to shooting 300 yards or more with a .22.

My experience is they generally drop more, but group tighter at those distances.

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

I can email someone pics (to post for me) of my Winchester 52C shooting FGMM HV ammo at 200 yds. I did not put a tape to the group but my circles are 1". 2 of us shot each 10 shot groups that I would say are about 2 3/4 to 3" for each 10 shot group. Coolest part was watching the bullets fly into the target with the sun behind us. It was impressive to shoot a 22 at that distance!

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

haven't tried it, but i think my 40x could do pretty good

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

The best overall ammo we have shot is the remington subsonic. All bulk packs we have shot at our range are not very good. I have a 10/22 with a Tatical solutions barrel and it will shoot 200 all day long with a good rest and low wind.

Hope this helps..

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

I'll give the Rem. Subsonics a +1 also. May MKII savage shoots them very will. It's my go round for everything except matches. Where I set-up to the FGMM 922a load. Both ammo shoots the same but the Rem. Subs have 2-3 flier every 50 other than that It's just on me to do my part.

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

this month's rimfire comp at 200 yards with the CZ455 & CCI SV, the last 5 shots withing 30 seconds, which opened the 5" round group i had going (shouldn't have done that, it was the best group i've ever shot at 200 with a .22lr at that distance) to 7.5".

NOV12200y.jpg

the last five where no where stretched across the 7.5", so yes with some previous shooting experience at 200 and proper dope and semi calm conditions 8" isn't that much of an issue.

shooting that distance for the first time and not having 3 half of them. the next time you should have all 5.

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?!

New to the hide just commenting
Been shooting smith&wesson M&P .22lr have Nikon 3-9 prostaff BDC, using blazer standard velocity, at 10 inch gong have been hitting 6 out of 10 at 200 yards.

Yes....how could you miss?

Go 3" gongs in 30 seconds.

How could you miss? Easy. 20 knot switchy wind...........no flags...........good day to stay home and drink rum. I truly cannot believe all these long range feats of derringdo AND THERE IS NEVER a mention of windflags. Unbelievable........really.... especially with a rimfire. Been there/ done that/do that on a regular basis/ know the problems, and they are legion.

Sometimes I get to thinking I can actually shoot a rifle .... Then I read others (like in this post) experiences with a rifle and realize that I am far below the average shooter...........

I don't have a problem with accuracy shooting 1073 fps ammo out of a 26" barrel (which turns it into 1050-1060 fps ammo) out to 200 meters. I don't think you need to shoot HV ammo at distance you just need the elevation available in your scope, and that's an easy fix. I am hoping to try it further on out this summer, it is a little too chilly to do it right now in Maine.

Six seconds a shot. Once zeroed you should have no problem.
