I need some help with my scope decision. I'd like to spend at or under $1000 plus tax for a scope to be placed on a rifle that is going to be used specifically for getting my feet wet in F T/R matches. I have been shopping around and I'm at a crossroads. I like the looks and price of the Vortex Viper PST 6x24x50 FFP. I've read the threads on the FFP vs. SFP topic but still a little hazy on the F class vs F T/R class process. In F T/R will I need to range targets quickly or are distances known? Depending on the answer to that question, would it be better to go with the Vortex or get a better quality SFP scope without the features I don't need (illuminated reticule). Any suggestions on a good quality SFP would be appreciated as well. Sorry, I know its a lot of questions. I'm new to long range shooting and the extra in put would help
Thanks

Re: Vortex PST FFP vs. Better SFP for F T/R

F-Class is Known Distance, Square Range. A SFP reticle will generally serve you better, as they are usually thinner than a comparable FFP reticle and so subtend less of the target, allowing more precise placement of the reticle.

700Greenie, you would be better suited with a SFP scope, such as the Sightron, the reticle on the 6-25 X50 PST is rather thick especially for the targets at 100 yards. Also we have a very good f-class forum here on the Hide.

Re: Vortex PST FFP vs. Better SFP for F T/R

Buster,
Thank you for the reply. My confusion is the difference in F vs F T/R. Is F T/R basically the same, minus the weight, bipod, and caliber restriction, as F? This is really why the SFP vs. FFP question.

Re: Vortex PST FFP vs. Better SFP for F T/R

F-Class is basically Open Class with weight limit. FT/R-CLass is .223Rem or .308Win only shot off a bipod and lower weight limit. The COF is the same and most serious shooters look for a thin reticle. NPR1 being quite popular.

Re: Vortex PST FFP vs. Better SFP for F T/R

Many ranges will have F class shoots and allow FTR rifles as well as open so don't fret about that in the beginning. FFP or SFP both can be made to work equally well.

A 6-24 PST is a great scope and the Sightron Siii's have gotten good reviews. So if you want FFP then get the PST, if you want SFP the sightron might be a better choice.

Re: Vortex PST FFP vs. Better SFP for F T/R

I have the PST 6-24x50 SFP, its a good scope. The glass is clear and bright and as other posted the benefit of the SFP, is the reticle doesn't obscure smaller objects at longer ranges.

Turrets adjustment have a positive feel and the shims that are supplied are a simple method of a zero stop for elevation turret. Spend some time behind one and see if it works for you.

I posted the second time in the FT/R section due to the recommendation above. I tried to delete this one but was not able to since this one already had replies. Just trying to get as much info as possible.

I'm just giving you shit. Humor doesn't always convey as humor on the net.

Here's my take on the topic. I run a SFP NF on my .338 because it's strictly for 1000+ shots and FFP is waste at those ranges. Now the .308 gets a FFP because it's 1300 and below where FFP is actually useful. So to the point of your post, I'd say go for great glass if you're really reaching out there otherwise you can get by without a major ding in your wallet with the PST or like scope.

No worries man,
Still learning the site so a little shit is expected. Thanks for the input.

Re: Vortex PST FFP vs. Better SFP for F T/R

What? FFP is worthless beyond 1300? How do you figure that? Never shoot on a day with lots of mirage?

very good point ^^

Re: Vortex PST FFP vs. Better SFP for F T/R

I've come to realize that the most useful thing about FFP for MY PURPOSES is being able to dial down for mirage. I usually shoot my Viper PST at 18x, regardless of the range. I can hold off for wind and not worry about doing any calculations. 24x sucks when the mirage is bad.

Re: Vortex PST FFP vs. Better SFP for F T/R

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm looking into the NF. I'll save up a little longer and get something better quality.
