Hi guys. Does anyone have any cure/help for this ailment? This started about 3 months ago, and is lingering/wont go away. I have been taking Chondroitin/glucosamine which is kinda taking the edge off. I over did it with Advil, and ulcerated my stomach. I also tried one of those slip over arm tendonitis bands, and it did nothing. Thanks for the help.

Re: Golfers Elbow

I was plagued with the "elbow" for years which was exacerbated by drawing a Para 1911 out of a holster in speed matches and practice. I finally read somewhere that if you sleep with your arms pulled in tight to your body it would stress the tendon in the elbow. The solution was to obtain an orthopedic brace that would keep your arms from being pulled in so tight. I couldn't find the brace so I just sleep with my arms around a pillow... or a big fat woman but they usually make noise and complain so the pillow is my choice. It worked for me!

Caveat: I am neither a licensed physician nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

I had this after extended practice session with my bow and saw my physician shortly after it. A couple questions:

Are you resting it (meaning not doing whatever it is that make it hurt?)
Do you ice it when it hurts? (20 mins on/off is typically recommended)
What band are you using and how/where was it adjusted?
What dosage of Ibuprofen were you taking?

Yes to the resting. I did it driving an old Mack cabover that has a really tight reverse. I dont drive that truck anymore so that is helping.
I am not icing it. It only hurts with pressure at certain angles. Quick pain then subsides a little bit.
The band was from CVS a Futuro model, one with a gel pad on either side. I followed the directions as how to put it on.
Advils were 200mg 10-12 a day.
I try to milk it as much as possible, so as to not make it worse.

Re: Golfers Elbow

Go to tenexhealth.com Find a physician near you that does the procedure and ask them if you may be a candidate. I am in the healthcare field and have seen this work for many people. I am in no way affiliated with Tenex.

Thanks dude. I'm gonna look into this.

Re: Golfers Elbow

Aaah.. Medial Epicondylitis...

I got this earlier in the year from overdoing it with crossfit muscle-ups.

I stopped doing them and really rested it for a month and it completely disappeared. It will go away but you really do have to lay off it.

Re: Golfers Elbow

I dont often visit this area but saw the title of this post and it caught my eye. For the last 2-3 months my left arm has been bothering the crap out of me. Especially at night when at rest.

Not having any medical knowledge and being a hypochondriac I assumed it was the last elbow illnes I had heard about "bursitis" and my bursa sac was inflamed.

Now I'm thinking Tennis Elbow. What made me think this is that I do sleep with my elbows pulled in and when I roll at night I usually wake myself from the pain in my elbow. Last night I tried keeping my arm straight when sleeping. There was improvement.

I wont be taking any anti inflammatories and stopping my workouts (as meager as they are) will lead to putting on the pounds, lethargy, high blood pressure, diabetes and ultimtely death so I will be an idiot and keep worjking out just hoping the pain goes away.

Re: Golfers Elbow

My Dr told me that most people who use the arm band things dont tighten them tight enough.

He also said sleeping with your arm curled in tight, like the other poster said, will cause it to linger. I sleep that way a lot and yes, it makes it hurt more. I try to sleep with it straight and it is helping.

Re: Golfers Elbow

I'm a licensed massage therapist up here in MT. Medial epicondylitis is a nagging issue that can be treated. If anti-inflammatories aren't taking care of it, try getting a competent massage therapist, preferrably one certified in orthopedic massage, and they can likely help you not only get rid of the problem in the short term, but help you identify kinesthetically the root of your particular problem, and suggest things to do that will help prevent it from coming back in the future.

Likely causes outside of joint inflammation include hypertonicity (excess tension) in your Brachialis insertion (upper arm muscle that attaches to the medial epicondyle) or too much tension in your forearm musculature, especially Ulnar side (pinky-side) muscles.

HTH, find a decent massage therapist and keep your mind out of the gutter

Re: Golfers Elbow

Thanks for all the help guys I really appreciate it.

Edit: Sniper, I think I had it too tight.....below the band my forearm would get cold and stiff.....that was probably too tight. :-/ I just want this pain gone.

Re: Golfers Elbow

Mine developed after I started shooting pistol 4+ times a week.

Perhaps my death grip on the pistol, besides making me a sucky shot, has been tearing up all those places MontanaHick mentioned.

I have this condition - I think it started from excessive pullup workout. I did the 150 pullup workout from crossfit one day, felt great the next, and did it again just for kicks (because I'm a moron). Then it started acting up shortly after that. I'm going to try not curling my arm up as much when I sleep. Now that I think of it, when I sleep curled up, the next day absolutely sucks.

Off-topic - I finished jump 18 - going on to Cat G. License still 2 years in the making come February. At least this elbow issue isn't slowing me down yet.

Mackdrvr - if you solve this issue, let me know - I've done a lot of phys therapy, stretching, icing, etc. The best I manage is low impact high repetition stuff, and I generally only get a twinge of pain every now and then in certain movements.

Re: Golfers Elbow

Tennis Elbow and Golfer's elbow can both develop from overuse and the way you sleep (arms bent). You can also develop carpel tunnel if your sleeping with your arms bent and your wrists bent as well (fetal position). I slept this way for many, many years and developed mild carpel tunnel. After I stopped sleeping with my wrists bent it almost completely went away. However, I subsequently developed tennis elbow from chopping wood. I had a cortisone shot and it helped dramatically. Lastly, I developed cubital tunnel syndrome from sleeping with my arms bent at night. There are braces that will help keep your arms straight at night. I know it seems crazy, but the way you sleep can cause all these problems. In utero we sleep in the fetal position and for many of us this continues throughout our life. As it relates to the cubital tunnel syndrome, B6 also seemed to help me. It's supposed to help with nerve function. Bottom line, if you're experiencing any of these symptoms see a well qualified arm and hand physician. Good luck to all.
