Thinking on doing a light weight 338 edge. Do any of you guys have a light weight 338? Also the barrel I was looking at would finish at 28 with muzzle diameter of .689, you think that would be too light of a contour?
I got an 8lb .338/300 RUM with homemade brake. It kicks pretty good, but I don't think it's all that bad, especially offhand, YMMV. The barrel heats up quick with 106 grains of powder a shot. FWIW I'd consider a scope with long eye-relief...
Pic of the .338 (brown laminate) next to my 7WSM (gray laminate) for comparison.
Movie still of the recoil off bags/bench (muzzle jumps badly).
It could use a more effective brake but the recoil's not that bad IMHO. To be honest it was a budget build and I got tired of drilling holes in the stainless bar stock and quit early.
I don't have a lot to compare the recoil to. More than my 13lb 7WSM (pictured) that launches 180vlds@~3000fps (without a brake) but less than my 14lb 510WSM launching 650gr Ball@1700fps.
I don't really have anything in between. I think it's manageable, not that I'd sit and shoot 50 at a time off the bags. I'm not fat enough to handle that all day nor patient enough to wait for the barrel to cool between shot strings.
With a dedicated .338 brake I think it wouldn't be any worse than your 300RUM. There's a lot of powder behind the bullet in the Edge. Brakes work very well even with the 300 OTMs.
I've found it's pretty easy to make a gun heavier if you don't like the recoil. Proper stock fitment and a nice soft recoil pad will help a bunch too. My rifle's only got a hard plastic buttplate. It'll also help if you're not a skinny bastard like me.
I've shot a 338 Edge that weighed in at 12# with optics and DBM. It had a Proof Reseach carbon barrel on it with their brake. It was less recoil than my Remington 308 LVSF. Needless to say I was impressed.
My edge is just over 12 lb fully set up. It has a Muscle break [ which is one of the best imo ] and is very manageable. I would compare it to a 7 lb 3006
