I am going to shorten the barrel on my kimber 84M varminter 22-250 The reason is I am buying a supressor and the shorter barrel length will be more convenient. I am thinking of having about 5 inches cut off (just short of the fluting) My question is will I loose any velocity from 26 inches to 21. I understand that differnt powders have differnt burn rates etc. just wondering approximately how many inches it takes a 22-250 to burn up all its powder. Thanks in advance for any info.

Re: 22-250 velocitys

You will loose a little. I called the maker of the ammo on my 25-06 when I cut min from 26 to 20 in and they said I only lost 50fps. Give that a try.

Re: 22-250 velocitys

Its probably using all 26" to make velocity, so your gonna lose some. Most likely 20fps/per 1" at first, but 30-40fps/1" closer to the 20" mark. These are numbers from reading online reports(YMMV) You should cut an inch at a time, and tell us....Let your smith make the final cut though!!

</div></div>I was shooting the 40 grain Hornady vmax out of a stock rem 700 with a 20" barrel and was getting 4180 5 shot average out of the chrono.

Re: 22-250 velocitys

I have a rem 700 in 223 with a 26inch barrel and a ruger m77 mkII in 223 also with a 22 inch barrel I loaded up some 50grn sp with 27grns of h335 and was getting 3425 with both rifles. not sure if the approx 10 extra grains in the 22-250 will all burn also or not.
