Rifle build questions

What do I need to look for when choosing a gunsmith to install a barrel? I'm going to use a custom action so I shouldn't need any action work. My plan for a build is to use a Tac-30 action, have it barreled, and then drop it into a chassy. It seems like the cheapest way to build a custom bolt gun because you aren't paying for very much gunsmithing. Any comments or advice?

Re: Rifle build questions

There are a number of great smiths here on the hide.

Dana English
Robert Gradous
Accurate Ordnace
GAP
LA Precision
Bugholes
SAC
Pheonix
just to name a few off the top of my head.

I would send all the components to a smith of your choice. Just make sure they are reputable and they give you a good feeling when talking to them over the phone. Rebarrel will cost you about 300 in labor. You will still need a smith to do a few more things like trigger work, painting, and final fitting.

You should be able to get all this done for <800 in labor with a custom action and no bedding.

+1 for SAC, Mark is GTG, and you should add Jon Beanland to this list, he is an Excellent gunsmith

Not to take **ANYTHING** away from any of the other smiths listed here, or any of the others NOT listed here, but I have a decent bit of experience now with SAC rifles by Mark Gordon, and then are stunningly good shooters.

My partners 308 could continue "same-holeing" @ 200 yards until YOU dropped one. It did this from day one, until he sent it back to Mark at ~2000 rounds, to be rebarreled as a 260. Honestly, I was a little saddened to see it go, because it didn't seem possible the new one could shoot as well as the old. Wrong! The new 260 shoots every bit as well. It's incredible.

Another friend just got his rifle from Mark. It is essentially a copy of my partner's old 308, and I'll be damned if it doesn't shoot every bit as well as the others. I'm seriously impressed.
