Im in central NY, and this year the ticks are real bad. Anyone know of a why to repel them without stinking up the place.

Re: having problems with ticks...

They are pretty tough to completely eliminate. When I'm in the woods Turkey hunting I put Off! Deep Woods Sportsmen Insect Repellent on my boots and pants cuffs, and it seems to help. The Sportsmen contains 98.25% Deet, but any repellent with a high Deet content should help.

Good Luck

Re: having problems with ticks...

Permethrin seems to be the go-to clothing treatment to repel ticks. I've treated my hunting clothes/boots and been out a bunch this year pre season scouting and bowhunting without a tick yet. It does have a smell to it but a ton of guys swear by it. I use a scent spray before hitting the woods so not sure if it's anything to worry about.

Re: having problems with ticks...

Yep, Permethrin is the goto.. Just remember its to spray your clothes and then let dry. DO NOT SPRAY ON SKIN....

Re: having problems with ticks...

Permethrin! If it smells after it dries I sure can't tell. And you can wash your clothes in scent eliminator stuff after it's applied. Permetrhin is usually good for 7 washes or so.

The stuff I bought is just a Permethrin spray. No fancy name/company/product. Got it at my local archery shop

Re: having problems with ticks...

Walmart sells Permethrin. Yellow spray bottle for 9.99. I just leave it in my truck..

Re: having problems with ticks...

ticks are tough to deal with. most bug issues go away during cold weather. ticks don't...especially if you deer hunt. they are loaded with ticks and those are the ones that you really need to be careful with. just be really careful and check daily to make sure you dont have any one you.

Re: having problems with ticks...

A buddy's property is in a county with one of the highest rates of lyme disease, needless to say ticks are an issue. I use some stuff called Sawyers, mail ordered from somewhere. Wash your clothes in it, let dry & your good to go. One more beneficial things I've seen done as a end of the day "preventative measure" is get a bottle of dog shampoo & lather up just make sure one those little creepies didn't get past your permethrin.

Re: having problems with ticks...

Use the clothing wash as described above and et it dry on your clothes. Works VERY well. These treatments are not meant to be applied to clothes while wearing them as you should NOT get it on your skin,.

I live in deer tick central here and have had Lymes myself several times. It really sucks.

The sprays meant to be put on your skin also help. However, they work properly when applied to skin. Spraying clothing with them does little to repel ticks.

Be sure to tuck your pants into your boots or blouse them military style. That is about the only way yo keep them from crawling up your trouser legs on the inside. You can also duct tape your cuffs around your lower legs or get a pair of the commercially available tick gaiters that are out there.

Do as much as you can to prevent getting tick diseases, and there are several of them in the USA. Trust me, it's not fun suffering from them until the meds kick in and get rid of them.

If you suffer any of the symptoms like unexplained headaches, muscle or joint pain, etc., get medical assistance as soon as possible and press the doctor to do the proper testing. Even here with such a widespread abundance of people with tick borne diseases there is reluctance by doctors to treat it effectively.

Latest research has shown a lot of the beliefs about Lymes are not true. Like there is no minimum time a tick must be attached to transmit the disease, you do not always get the bulls eye mark at the bite site and you may actually never actually find the bite site. If you have symptoms, get to the clinic.

Every december I put my dogs on a 30 day course of Doxycycline just to clear up what the Lymes shots, Front Line and Front line spray don't prevent.

If you have a Tractor Supply Center (TSC), you can get it in concentrate for much less. Mix your own. I've been buying Sawyer's brand, and it was getting expensive.

Re: having problems with ticks...

Fly spray for horses and cattle have permethrin in it, I have sprayed it directly on my skin in hot summer months with no ill effects.........

Re: having problems with ticks...

I spray jeans and boots with Permethrin. I wear a poly base layer under jeans and shirt so they can't get to me. Thats for turkey hunting. For deer I wait for a killing frost before I go out.

What I what to know is what did they do a hundred years ago? What did the Indians do? What about civil war times? Were there not ticks back then?

Re: having problems with ticks...

That old brown Listerine works well enough. Put it in a spray bottle and give your clothes a good once over.

Re: having problems with ticks...

Permanone® Tick Repellent - Forestry Suppliers, Inc..

I ve used this stuff for years and people who work in the timber on a daily basis believe in it as well.

Re: having problems with ticks...

Hey Force Multiplier I like your thinking. Maybe my steady diet of Copenhagen, cheap coffee and rot gut whisky helps. Or maybe I am just lucky enough to have someone to check me for ticks!!

Seriously though I guess I am lucky to live outside the Lyme disease zone. They used to preach about Rocky Mountain Tick fever when I was a kid. You don't hear much about that anymore though.

Re: having problems with ticks...

Like I said, Permethrin.
First year ever of both Spring and Fall turkey and fall deer bowhunitng that I did not have a single tick. Not one.
That stuff is amazing.

I resemble those dietary components as well. My problem is I live in the South. You can think about going outside here in the warmer months and a tick will just appear on you. 2 of my 3 children have had Lyme and RMSF. We live by Permithin as others have stated. Stuff just plain works. Problem is you can pick up a tick here by just walking outside.

mix it down to 2% in a spray bottle, treat all exterior clothes and let them dry. store them in plastic garbage bags in your truck/trunk until time to wear them. the permethrin will survive a few washings as well. I was skeptical at first but after using it this year, i'm a full on believer. last saturday i sat under a pine tree for a little while and felt one of the bastards crawling on my neck. pulled it off and placed it on my pant leg...within a minute it just fell off, lifeless. that little jug from TSC will last you a LONG LONG time. it's 10% diluted in the bottle and needs mixed down with tap water 5:1 and you do not have to saturate your clothing. once dried, it has NO odor. I have video of a fork buck that walked circles around me for 15 minutes during archery, i was ground hunting and sitting on a stump in full camo with cover scent on. He knew SOMETHING was in his home but could not tell what I was. He spent WAY too much time close to me for me to believe he could smell human or anything that was objectionable. I've also had some does directly downwind of me within the 10 yard mark that paid NO attention to me whatsoever. Leads me to believe that it has no real scent that will spook the deer.

Re: having problems with ticks...

On a pipeline that I was working on this year one of track hoe operators had these white looking bracelets around his boots. After further investigation I found out they were flea and tick dog collars. He swore by them.

Re: having problems with ticks...

they have told you the best thing to feep them off ya.So I'll say to how to get them off really fast ( rubbing alcohol )
