Sup all? I have a savage precsion 10 .308 rifle and currently Im running a Nikon Monarch 4-16 BDC scope burris 1" rings on EGW 20MOA scope mount. The Nikon can only shoot to about 600yd till the target is out of the scope. This is using the BDC calculator online and not using any type of elevation adjustment. I would like to learn how to make my own adjustments with elevation/wind to align my crosshairs on target at distance instead of just aiming above the target with the BCD.

Should I stick with the BDC or go for a different scope to achieve my goal? What are your guys thoughts on the subject? If I were to go with a different scope, then I would be looking in the price range of $500-600.

THanks for the help.

Re: Newbie Rifle Scope Help

Typically scopes with thicker tubes have more travel. Might want to go ahead and step up to 30mm.

Budget scopes it's hard to beat the SWFA SS fixed power scopes for the price. They come in mil/mil, Might want to try mil/mil now too. It's a easy system once you have a few hours getting your head wrapped around the concept.

Re: Newbie Rifle Scope Help

Most LR shooters dial for range and hold for wind. You need to forget the BDC and look at Vortex PST and SWFA offerings. Best for budget price with great options, warranty and customer service IMO. Would recommend variable magnification with 20-24 top end to take advantage of your 308. Also get 20-30 MOA canted base to be able to dial more at LR. Just retread your question and you already have a perfect base!

Re: Newbie Rifle Scope Help

All good info. I know youre suppose to dial for wind and elevation but never got into it until now. I really want to learn how to do it and become good at it. Any pointers for good info? Or will my search on google and youtube be creditable info?

I must have missed the part about the 30mm tube. Thanks for the heads up. Ill definitely change it out for next year.

Scroll to to to the top of this section you posted in and read the threads that are marked with a sticky "optics FAQ" and "optics selection", also click on the sub forum "bolt action rifles" and read the sticky " getting started in long range shooting FAQ" near the top. Should help get you started and develop what you already have a grasp of. May be a good place to start

This forum has a custom google search that crawls through old discussions, its on the right hand side of your screen. Scroll down slightly and you will see it. Very handy-

There's days worth of reading on here,
Have fun-

Re: Newbie Rifle Scope Help

Ok. I think I got most of it. After staying up till about 4am reading majority of the info I wanted to make sure Im on the right track.

I plan on getting an MOA 1/4MOA @ 100yd scope. So to find out my elevation adjustment at a given yardage I would do as follows. This is all hypothetical and the numbers are false.

Find my distance to target with the formula for MOA. H"x100/MOA=X Say x is 500. 5 x 1.047 = 5.235. Then I take that number and multiply it by the inches of drop according to the ballistics on the round Im using. So now that I got a total of say 14.434 how do I put that into my elevation turret? The number of 1/4MOA it takes to reach 14.434? 14.5 x 4? 58 clicks (1/4MOA) on the turret?

Thanks for all the help. I feel Im grasping it after a few hour read.

Re: Newbie Rifle Scope Help

Oh wait. Unless... 1/4MOA @ 100yd is increase every 100yd. So 200yd is 1/2MOA 300yd is 3/4MOA. So 500yd would be 1.25MOA and every movement of the turrent would equal 1.25MOA?

Im lost here and couldnt find good info on this part.

Use YouTube videos, Ryan Cleckner with the N.S.S.F. should help.

Re: Newbie Rifle Scope Help

I have shot with those Nikon BDC scopes in the past. They really are only designed for hunting and kind of worthless for anything else IMO. There was good advice above to get into a Super Sniper or similar. Vortex has good offerings, as does Bushnell. I personally went with a Bushnell HDMR myself and have really enjoyed it. Dont be shy to spend everything you can reasonably budget on your glass. If I could have afforded a Schmidt when I bought my Bushnell, I would have.

Just remember that everything when dealing with this kind of stuff is in angular measurements. The further you go out, the bigger those angles become. Roughly 1" at 100 yards is 1 MOA.. 1" at 200yards is roughly 1/2 MOA.

You seem to have the basics understood, but until you actually put it to use, you likely just wont get it.

Its an amazing feeling though when it just seems to all "Click" in your head.

Here is a good read for you to get you started..

Also, if you have an iPhone or Android, download a ballistics calc to help you understand everything in the field. I use iOS and prefer "Ballistic" myself.

Good luck and happy shooting!

Re: Newbie Rifle Scope Help

You're on the right track. 1/4 moa @ 100 is standard.

Get your scope mounted, zero'd at 100, then do the box test. That'll get you comfortable spinning turrets, and show you how things change when you do.

MOA is an angular measurement where 1 MOA will equals 1.047" at 100 yards. One 1/4 MOA click equals the same change in angle regardless of the distance, but 1/4 MOA equals .262" at 100 yards, twice that at 200, 5 times that (1.309") at 500, etc.

Those are some very helpful videos... Thanks for bringing them to attention!

Re: Newbie Rifle Scope Help

Also as mentioned before look into the SWFA SS line I use a 12x42 SS mil/mil on my .308 and I'm very pleased with the quality.
