I'm looking for dimensions for 2 brakes. The AAC 51T and TBAC 30BA. These are the 2 front runners for possible suppressors.

I've got an 8.2" 300 BLK barrel and am debating between a 7" and 9" rail. I've already purchased a 7" Seekins BAR but I have the chance to change it provided I get the info I need in time.

I need to get the brake or at least most of the effective portion of the brake forward of the rail.

I need the distance from the back of the brakes (seat) to both the location where the muzzle blast first hits the atmosphere and to the first braking surface (end of first chamber). I hope that makes sense.

Normally I wouldn't fuss over 2". However, I'm a rather big guy and I need the most space available.

Re: Muzzle brake lengths. TBAC and AAC.

The 30BA will have sideways blast within usually about 0.2-0.3" of the actual muzzle location.

My .300 Fireball upper (built before BLK was "reinvented") has a 10" barrel and uses a PRI rifle length handguard. It is always shot suppressed.

Re: Muzzle brake lengths. TBAC and AAC.

I'm betting it is roughly the same as most other brakes right?

Well I guess that throws the 9" out the window. That would put the blast right into the rail.

I ultimately wanted to throw the suppressor under a 13" rail, but when it comes to testing loads, especially subsonic loads, I would have to remove the suppressor and be stuck with a muzzle blast inside the rail.

Oh well.

Re: Muzzle brake lengths. TBAC and AAC.

"Under the rail". Don't think that happening. I shot an 8 inch with AAC 7.62SDN6. It worked great. And shot it without can and supersonic loads, worked great with AAC BRAKE.

I think for size and weight, AAC gets the nod for this application. Either should work great , just not under a rail. Unless I'm missing something.

I can measure an AAC brake tonight for you.

If you're planning on running a can and it will fit under the rail, put whatever length rail you want on it. You can always slide a piece of coiled sheet metal or something inside for testing, or just remember not to put your hand up there. The AAC brake won't work well in that case, though, you won't be able to reach the latch.

Re: Muzzle brake lengths. TBAC and AAC.

Well my concern is mostly with causing damage to the weapon itself. I'm aware enough to keep my hand away from the blast. Will the blast actually damage the rail if left alone?

The other issue is, will the brake still be effective if the gas is somewhat trapped by the rail?

Re: Muzzle brake lengths. TBAC and AAC.

From the rear face to the back of the first port is 1.1", and the baffle is at 1.5" on the AAC brake. The rear face should end up .5-.6" behind the muzzle if I remember right. On a 9" rail, the first baffle should be almost even with the hand guard, and the suppressor latch will be recessed around 1", making removal very difficult.

You won't damage the rail other than getting carbon on it, and the brake will still be effective.

Re: Muzzle brake lengths. TBAC and AAC.

I think I've decided the course of action.

The order just shipped so I'll be stuck with the 7" for now.

I plan to keep the 7" BAR and wait until I choose a dedicated suppressor for this rifle and actually get the suppressor. At which time I will probably be building an 18" SPR using a long MCSR rail. I will try the MCSR on the suppressed 8.2" and see how I like the heat and feel of a tucked suppressor. If I like the long setup I will buy a Seekins 13" or 15" MCSR rail for the SBR. Both rails use the same barrel nut so that will keep things simple.

I will keep the BAR unless financial forces make me sell it. I can then swap the BAR with the MCSR if I need to develop more loads.

It is a more costly plan but it seems prudent. I just hope the extra rail sitting on my bench doesn't become another rifle.

Good luck with that.
