It a classic.

Re: Red Dawn

Classic Cold War movie... written by director/writer John Milius... same guy who did Dirty Harry, Hunt for Red October, Apocalypse Now, Jeremiah Johnson and so many great "Guy Movie" classics.

Remaking it would be like re-making Star Wars with an all midget cast.

Get a copy of the original and enjoy. As a bonus, you get to see Charlie Sheen as a teen psycho, long before he was a psycho in real life...

Cheers,

Sirhr

PS... Red Dawn Trivia... only one other movie had Patrick Swayze/Jennifer Grey in it... and it was not a guy movie!!!!

Re: Red Dawn

IMO, Red Dawn was an OK movie. It seemed kind of cheesy when I was a kid (when it came out). However, I was living in the Cold War, with a thought of a Russian threat. Today, I doubt younger people know much about the Cold War, what kind of threat Reagan would talk about. From that standpoint, the movie may loose a lot of meaning.

The new movie looks like they tried to adapt technology with a slightly different foe. May not be as bad as you think, especially for the target audience.

Red Dawn wasn't really about the Russians invading, Milius' real point is far less obvious, but hardly hidden.

I hope the remake doesn't suck, but won't be surprised if it does.

Re: Red Dawn

When the Cuban Col. asks for the 4473 forms... you know exactly what Milius had in mind.

If you didn't grow up under threat of being turned into air pollution by a thermonuclear weapon... Red Dawn is missing something. But it's still a fun watch.

Cheesy... duh. It's about as cheesy as it gets. But entertaining as hell and a total product of our era. I lived knowing that when Plattsburgh AFB was nuked, we were all glow-sticks. Like The Green Berets which was 1 generation earlier... it was for a certain generation.

Remaking Red Dawn in 2012 is just inane.

Cheers,

Sirhr.

Little known fact... It's also the 1st PG-13 movie ever made.

Re: Red Dawn

Another little known fact(s). This was Charlie Sheen's 3rd movie, but the first one where he appeared in the credits.

Also, obscurely mentioned by Guy Montag, John Milius had used the events of the Cold War as a the fuel for the movie, but what his true intent behind it was that the Russians and Cubans actually represented OUR federal government. He used the Russians and Cubans mainly because it was unlikely that he would have been able to make an anti-government movie during those times.

Re: Red Dawn

Usually when a good movie like Red Dawn is remade it usually sucks but that trailer looked pretty badass. Wolverines!

Re: Red Dawn

I think the movie RED DAWN could have been one of the reasons I joined the Marine Corps. Saw it when I was very young and it stayed with me even until now

Technically a Gene Wilder film beat it to the theaters as the first PG-13, but close enough.

I saw a screening of "Red Dawn" in Santa Monica back in 2008 and afterward they had the production designer talk about making the vehicles look somewhat close to Warsaw Pact systems. The Hind helicopters were oil rig ferrying Pumas that were too expensive to purchase, so they leased them for a year, did all of the modifications but had to use a water-based paint that kept peeling off to reveal the bright yellow original paint job.

The ground vehicles were much more elaborate and significant effort went into making the ZSU-23-4 which turned out so realistic that CIA folks showed up at the lot to ask them where they got it. "We have the only one in North America...where did you get this one?"

Re: Red Dawn

The first one is one of the worst movies ever made. Not one realistic scene in the whole thing.

Re: Red Dawn

Even if that's so, the masses still ate it up. Entertaining and plausible are terms which often counter each other. I enjoyed the flick, and if it was erroneously educational, I still managed to live long enough to type this.

"Porky's". One of my all time favs. Yes, right up there with Sound of Music and Animal House!

There was a thread about the new Red Dawn awhile back. Had to change the plot from being invaded by the Chinese to North Koreans due to political pressure if I remember correctly.

Think I'll pass.....

Too close to reality?

Re: Red Dawn

Thought the first one was retarded. Just plain stupid. I'll see this one ONLY because I don't talk trash about a movie I haven't seen. But I'm not expecting much from it

So Wikepedia, History.com, imdb, yahoo, faqs.org, and every other website that pops up when you google "first pg-13 movie" must be incorrect...

No, they are correct and I am wrong. I could have sworn it beat "Red Dawn" to theaters at the time, but that's not it. Perhaps it was the first to get the rating? I remember there being a controversy at the time: PG-13 for violence vs PG-13 for sex?

Re: Red Dawn

The original had me digging spider holes in my back yard and practicing my commie killing. I don't know about this new version. I may have to wait until I hear some reports on it.

Re: Red Dawn

Saw a clip this morning where one of the kids is watching a group of bad guys through a scoped AK. Only problem was his rear scope cover was down the whole time.

I got a bad feeling about this remake.

Re: Red Dawn

My adult kids, who love the original, are home for Thanksgiving. We went to the midnight showing. Entertaining, but lacked a level of passion and intensity that made the original so fun. I won't say it was a disappointment, because my hopes were not very high going in.

Re: Red Dawn

The scope thing was very obvious, but overall not to bad. It followed loosely and was updated to modern times.

Re: Red Dawn

I wondered wether my example was taking hold with my kids, until we watched the original at home on Video. When the ambush took place at the remote gas station, all three (who were still little kids at the time) hollered "Spider Holes!" at the same time.
I basked in a warm glow for the rest of the evening.

Re: Red Dawn

Go see the new Red Dawn. One of the best movies I've seen and I grew up day dreaming about Russian paratroopers landing in my school yard.

Re: Red Dawn

It was an ok movie... If you have seen the original you will recognize some of the lines... Wasn't Terrible but definately not as good as the original.

Only thing super retarded was all the chincoms rolling in US vehicles... Left the American flags on them just put Chinese sticker over the top and could see both...

Brought their AKs though.

And I've had enough of modern warfare references in movies to last me well forever.

Re: Red Dawn

Seemed perfectly plausible to me that they used our Humvees; why wouldn't an invading force loot and commandeer our military? We have plenty of bases and armories that are poorly guarded.

I was glad to see that they brought the Russians back into it too.

Re: Red Dawn

Definitely worth a watch. The story line was changed enough to make this version interesting. Like 99% of all movies - it is entertainment. Got my five dollars worth at the matinee.

Re: Red Dawn

Gotta see it at some point. I've given belly rubs to a couple of the actors.

Know the ISSR Shiloh Shepherds that were the guard dogs at the POW camp.

Re: Red Dawn

I just saw it and way old enough to remember the original. Of course, the original is better. But this is pretty good as a more modern version. The setting is a little more urban than the original. There is a harvesting a deer scene in this movie that's a lot funnier than the original.

I could comment on what I thought was somewhat BS but it would be a spoiler.

It was hilarious when the movie was over. All these kids stand up in red sweatshirts with "CCC" on them, from a private school. Thank God no "P" on the end, LMAO.

Re: Red Dawn

I want my 2 hours of life back...

I did enjoy the news clips in the beginning of the movie. But that was about it. Taking off mags, and setting rifles down to celebrate whilst behind enemy lines I thought was retarded. As was standing right IN the windows and silhouetting against the sky every time they engaged.

But not as retarded as the modern warfare kids behind me that talked through the whole movie. Spouting off dumb information about the firearms in the movie. During the tree shooting scene, all the water strikes got them hooting and hollering over the penetration of the 9mm that was "flying right through that tree".

Re: Red Dawn

Like many others here I grew up loving the original. I even had a 1980 C10 identical to the one in the movie (but mine was green). And I had a 686 not a SAA in the glove box when I was young. I think its a movie every young American should watch and think about. I know I got the meaning of it at a young age, and it is probably one of the many reasions I became a Marine too!

Semper FI!!

Re: Red Dawn

I have the 12 and 14 year old Nephews today so they watched the original on DVD this morning then we caught the new one. Both the boys thought the newer one was better, the other half is undecided but she just saw the original a year or so ago.

I liked them both but after all an original is just that. Overall not a bad show. Enough of the original but new enough to keep me entertained. I didn't expect anything more than that.

Re: Red Dawn

I was going to wait for some reviews before I got tickets for it.
I dont like how the main charecter pops out of his "hidey hole" with a tech 9. Give me a break. The russians would just laugh. America cant be taken back with tech 9s.

Re: Red Dawn

Just saw the new one tonight. I think the original was better but the new one was ok.
And DirectAssault, they even talk about how crappy the tech 9 is and show how they cant hit a tree from ten feet away, but it's all they have at first.
