BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) — Two people died and dozens were hurt Thursday when at least 100 vehicles collided in Southeast Texas in a pileup that left trucks twisted on top of each other and authorities rushing to pull survivors from the miles of wreckage.

The collision occurred in extremely foggy conditions at about 8 a.m. Thanksgiving Day on Interstate 10 southwest of Beaumont, a Gulf Coast city about 80 miles east of Houston.

Officials at Acadian Ambulance service told KFDM-TV that at least 51 people have been taken to area hospitals and at least eight are critically hurt.

It wasn't immediately clear how the pileup began, but Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Rod Carroll said the fog was so thick that deputies didn't immediately realize they were dealing with multiple accidents.

"It is catastrophic," Carroll said. "I've got cars on top of cars."

I-10's eastbound lanes were expected to remain closed for most of Thursday.

Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Stephanie Davis told KFDM that two people in an SUV died after the crash. She said at least 100 cars and trucks were involved in the accident.

Carroll said uninjured drivers tried to help as authorities sorted through the wreckage.

"It's just people helping people," Carroll said. "The foremost thing in this holiday season is how other travelers were helping us when we were overwhelmed, sitting and holding, putting pressure on people that were injured."

My daughter possibly could have been in the middle of this mess, but was late in leaving to come home for Thanksgiving.

As it was she was stuck in traffic for an hour and a half while trying to detour around it.

I'm very thankful for her getting home safe and sound to us today.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone caught up this tragedy.

For you guys who have never been on that section of Interstate, it can be an 80 mph, bumper to bumper, race track with NO MARGIN for error. Glad to hear Mr. Burkes Daughter is GTG. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Some of the most aggravating times of my life came while driving in foggy conditions. In Both Texas and Riverside California it seems as though many people actually speed up when it gets foggy.

Hopefully none of my packages where in those trucks.

People died and you're worried about your stuff?

Is this the highway in Tejas that has the new highest speed limit in the country? Like 85 MPH or something like that? Clearly we are NOT ready for Autobahn status.

Thats 130 down east of Austin. Theyve already had some big crashes down there but nothing like this which is not so unusual for I-10. I was leaving Houston one morning on whats called black ice...when the road has a lot of oil on it from it not raining and then you get ice on top of that. I had a front whell drive car and had no traction. It was really scary. About 15 miles east of Houston a family had spun out of control and slid under a tanker carring sulfuric aid..it ruptured...not pretty.

They did a study on this and people do speed up without even realizing it. Has something to do with deprivation. Since the can no longer see things passing by them while their driving they tend to speed up.
