Rifle Scopes anyone running a Luepold 1.1-8x CQBSS

With the uncertainty around the 1-8x offering from S&B I'm leaning to either the 1.1-4x short dot or the 1.1-8x Leupold. I haven't had the opportunity to get behind the CQBSS yet. Like the idea of 8x magnification but I know exactly what I'm getting with the S&B and haven't had any experience with the Luepy. How good is the Leupold glass? Which is better from a durability standpoint? Not having a daylight visible red dot is a big detractor but the additional magnification counteracts. It's a lot of scratch to drop on an AR optic either way and I want to get it right. Any opinions welcomed.

For an AR-15 I like the shortdot better. For anything other than a 223 I like the Leupold better. I have both. If you are wanting to buy a used shortdot send me a PM as I am selling my AR and don't need the shortdot anymore.

Re: anyone running a Luepold 1.1-8x CQBSS

I have a CQBSS with the M-TMR reticle and have used it on my MK12 at home for the last year. Here's my thoughts on it:

Glass? Well, the visibility is magnificent and I haven't noticed anything about it that I didn't like above 3x. Below 3x there's some minor aberrations on the edges, but I didn't expect it to be an Aimpoint either. It's a 1.1x and I actually like it that way.

Durability? Beat the hell out of that thing, it's a tank. Having the full eyepiece assembly being the magnification is something I believe to be a big plus. The turrets are top notch too. I haven't heard anything either way with how they're holding up on the USMC's MK19s they purchased them for, but I'm sure they ran them through the paces prior to procurement and they will handle most anything you throw at it.

Fuck a daylight visible red dot. I aim and execute multiple target hammer pairs just fine. Of course I was brought up on iron sights.

It's versatility is what I like the most about it. Yes the majority of the time I'm set between 3-8x and have only played with it at 1.1x, but it's a great scope overall and I'm considering picking up a second for my .308 to shift the PMII over to a bolt gun.

What I don't like about it... On the mounting I had to go with the factory mount to get it out far enough for my long ass neck. I haven't tried my GDI mount on it yet as I'm about 10000 miles from that rifle right now...

Overall I believe it to be a wonderful scope and very much at home on my own rifle, but your own application may vary. What I would not run it on is anything I wanted to be lightweight and fast, or anything I was going to hold to within 500yds or less. Mine is a coyote and long range shooting rig with the capability of going into the scrub too, and that's exactly what I selected it for. Your own personal application will dictate which is best for you. Mention what that is and maybe I can give you some more insight.

I'd say if you gonna use it mostly on 1x-3x go for H27D.
If most of your usage will be inside 3x-8x range - go for TMR

Horus reticles are great!!!!!

Re: anyone running a Luepold 1.1-8x CQBSS

Thanks for the replies/reviews/photos.

Redmanss, this one is a bit of an all purpose carbine...critter getter out to about 3-400 yards, training/paper punching, maybe a little 3 gun and a defensive rifle/get me home rifle if ever needed.

I know it's a tall ask and that 1 gun to do it all isn't necessarily practical, but I am really looking for something that can handle the 100-300 yard range exceptionally well while still being very capable in the 0-100 and 300-400 range as well. I'm looking for max versatility without the tradeoffs that usually come with it.

vtb, that Horus looks very nice. Maybe a bit busy at 8x but nice nonetheless.

On a .308 this is probably an easy decision...on a .223 a bit tougher as 8x may not be necessary.

Inside 500yds I would look more at one of the 1-6x scopes. In fact I'm just waiting to pay off some more bills and I'll be picking up one of the Mark 6 models for my carbine. Lighter weight is what I'm looking for there and it sounds like you are too.

Agreed, would consider either the Leupold Mk6 1-6x or the Swaro Z6i. I have the CQBSS and it is quite bulky compared to the Swaro Z6i that I have. Z6i is perfect on .223 from 0-300 yards.

Re: anyone running a Luepold 1.1-8x CQBSS

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I actually opted for another S&B 1.1-4x short dot. Tried and true. Was running one of these a few years ago and loved it. Was tough with my eyes past 300 yards but it was awesome from 200 in which is primarily where I'm shooting. Past 300, it'll be the .308.

Re: anyone running a Luepold 1.1-8x CQBSS

I have a CQBSS on my SR25 carbine and I couldn't be happier. For some reason when I look through it at 1.1 power the image is much brighter and clearer than looking with the baked eye. It is dead accurate in every way. The turrets are precise and well thought out. When you squeeze the turrets to turn the knob it is very tactile and grippy. My fingers never slipped whether sweaty or cold. Also it didn't matter where I was on the dialing I can always squeeze the knobs. They occupy all of the turret so you can never miss engaging them. I have the TMR reticle. My only gripe is that the center is not there. The crosshairs never meet at the center. Really not a problem for engaging body sized targets but doing precise work for groups is a little challenging for me. But still can shoot tight groups.

You won't regret if you get this. Just remember to get a 20 MOA base so you can get the full amount of turns on the scope

Re: anyone running a Luepold 1.1-8x CQBSS

Do NOT run a canted base on a CQBSS or any other 1x optic. I tried it in a Badger one piece canted mount and it really didn't work, throws off the planes when you dial down the magnification.

I'm running the factory 0moa Leupold mount and it works well. Haven't had the chance to try the 0moa GDI yet as I wanted to go to a QD for it. I have the full revolution turn and didn't disable the zero-stop on it, I like it that way.

Seconded, and not needed if you have the h27 version anyway. I've taken my 16" Knights ECC/CQBSS in a zero-degree mount out to 1270 yards using a combination dialing and holding in the reticle. If I remember right, it was about 19 mils.

For a 16" 7.62 carbine, I think the optic is ideal. They were quite literally designed for each other. A 5.56 gun would be better served by a cheaper, lighter, smaller 1-6x IMHO.
