I have seen them before, but I just can't justify the $1.20+ a piece for subsonic expanding bullets in a state that doesn't allow hunting with suppressors.

For what they charge for those I would buy the Lehigh Defense dedicated Subsonic bullets first. They open up like a mechanical broadhead and slice through instead of mushrooming up.

I have a buddy in TN that's a very very capable long range shooter and reloader; he was driven nuts by these bullets for high cost with poor results on target.

We got the Hornady 180 RN and Sierra 165 SGK to work far better on target past 50yd.

I have been using this bullet with great success this year. Over 50 deer taken on kill permits and most taken with high shoulder shots. Using in a whisper rifle and a .308. Expensive but effective. Velocities around 900 fps and average. shot is 50-75 yards.

reeljob do they expand without hitting bone? Or is that the reason for the shoulder shots? I'd like to see how'd they work on pigs. Yes they're pricey but certainly doable for a hunting round

Price seems crazy. However, stuff like this will encourage the larger bullet manufacturers to focus more on subsonic offerings and prices will come down.

So far these bullets have worked flawlessly and have expanded as advertised. Shoulder shots have been used as a means to anchor the animal since most engagements are in a urban setting and require the animal to not run off to expire. Some bullets have been recovered and results have been consistant. I do not know of any instances so far where bone was a issue except with head shots and result here is DRT. Keep in mind even though these bullets expand at low velocity they still lack terminal velocity due to sub sonic speeds and very little shock is applied to the target. Typically a follow up head shot with a rimfire insures the animal will still be down upon our return to collect the deer for processing to be donated to a local charitable orginazation for food banks. I do not believe I would ever trust a sub sonic bullet to anchor a trophy animal in a true hunting situation but these bullets do fill a need for our particular application.

We tested the Lehigh Defense 200 grain ME in gelatin this weekend. Expansion and a very impressive temporary cavity were verified down to 830 fps.
