Re: over all length of 7mm-08

It's best if you measure your chamber and then use a comparator on your caliper to measure from your bullets O-give. Otherwise you will never get the jump correct.
You don't need to crimp them.

Re: over all length of 7mm-08

There are several ways to measure a chamber but this is the one that works best for me and it's free. Just take one piece of whatever make of 7mm08 brass you are going to use(I'm using Nosler) and open up the neck just enough that you can put a 162 Amax in it without alot of force. You want it to be snug but still be able to move under pressure. With the bullet barely pushed in the brass take this dummy round and put it in your chamber and close the bolt. Take it out(carefully) and measure it. Do this as many times as you need to until you are certain that you have the correct size of your chamber.
In my Savage this gives me the same measurement almost everytime I do it.
The reason you want to measure from the O-give is that the point of the bullet doesn't touch anything in the chamber so it's really not important exactly how long it is. Plus, it varies alot even in bullets out of the same box.

Re: over all length of 7mm-08

I'm jumping my bullets about 0.010"-0.012" with 42gr of H4350. This is a fairly light load but out of my rifle it is making a hole at 200 yards with a 10 shot group that I can cover center to center with a quarter YMMV. Good luck.

Re: over all length of 7mm-08

I prefer the guess/check method of finding the lands.

FLS a piece of brass, and be sure it will drop cleanly into the chamber, all the way home (should make a nice "dink" sound), and drop right out if you tip the barrel up.

Seat a bullet LONG, drop this dummy round into the chamber. It should go "thunk" and not drop right out when you tip the barrel up.

Push the dummy round out with a cleaning rod from the muzzle.

Seat the bullet .010" more and try again.

Continue this until you find the COAL that **just** barely sticks the round. With one finger pushing on the casehead, and one hand on the cleaning rod, you will be able to push the round into the lands, and easily push it back out with the rod.

You've got it right when seating the bullet another .002" will cause it not to stick, and it'll again drop right back out of the chamber just by tipping the barrel up.

turbo54: On a side note as to a conversation we had awhile back, you were right. After tuning the 162 Amax load in better it's become extremely consistent. No real reason to use anything else in 7mm08 at reasonable distances.
