Tennessee woes

As you know, the key to successfully running the 3-4 defense is to have STUD defensive tackles & ends who are literally immovable against the run. The DC also needs depth there, as those big guys get winded if the drives are much more than 3-5 minutes at a time. Finally, you have to have smart, athletic MLBs who are big enough to stuff a 230 lb back AND run with a tight end or WR going over the middle. The learning curve for them to learn the reads, audibles & make the calls is at least a season too.

Bottom line, UT is in their first year with the defense. No surprise they're having significant growing pains. They have ZERO depth on that side of the ball, the MLBs are still learning the schemes, and they're playing in the unforgiving SEC.

My $.02, and as a Alabama graduate who lives in Memphis, I am LOVING every minute of the season they're having! I had to endure some bad seasons & streaks in the '90s and now it's fun again to say Roll Tide! UT will be back but they are going to need another 1-2 seasons to rebuild on defense and learn the 3-4.

Re: Tennessee woes

I've watched UT over the years, and I feel like they are in deep shit.
I live Tennessee football. Played my high school football in Tennessee.
But, I cant deny they are not getting better. Not by a long shot.
IMO, they are gonna have to break the piggy bank and buy a winner
just as Bama did. Tennessee has the jack. And..............
IT PAYS TO BE A WINNER!
go Vols.

Indeed they need to offer Gruden whatever it takes if he's willing.

Anyone disagree with the call against UT vs Missouri? Called Patterson's touchdown back because he was strutting a little. If anyone has a right to strut it's him the SOB is badass. Just like when LSU's kicker ran it in that one game last year and got called back cause he celebrated? Let the kids play. I mean it's a kicker that scored a touchdown on a run that's impressive he's earned the right to celebrate IMO. Such bullshit.

Re: Tennessee woes

Rulebook says that if you alter your stride to celebrate, it is a violation. The game commentators were aghast that the penalty was called, but then had to agree.
Heck, it gave Bray another chance to practice his touchdown passes!

Christ two more years of probation and we got blown out by vandy... yup we've hit rock bottom.

Re: Tennessee woes

The rumor mill as of late is that Tennessee has hired John Gruden away from ESPN and he will be the Vols new football coach. But anything has to be better then Dooley. That guy was a clown.

Re: Tennessee woes

Florida tried unsuccessfully to get Gruden. Why would he go to UT when he would not go to UF. Florida is a much better job with easier recruiting. Espn pays him 6 million a year. I don't think UT will pay that. Gruden is a dream for them. It ain't gonna happen.

Re: Tennessee woes

Gruden wouldn't come be our coach, we don't have the capability right now to run the spider 3 y banana. Not without throwing to the Venus.

There is a chance. Gruden has stated interest of getting back into coaching, his wife went to UT, he was an assistant coach at UT, and currently UT is the best coaching job available on the market. No college is going to pay him what he makes right now...that would put him above Nick Saban and would be a waste of money because a super bowl ring doesn't prove dominance or greatness in college football. He could honestly be a flop, but his name would attract recruits. I mean honestly what has Gruden done? His superbowl in the NFL according to most is with the team his predecessor (Dungie) assembled, there is risk with Gruden. But he's relatively young and is fired up when coaching. In some ways he's much like Muschamp. For the record i wanted Muschamp over Kiffin but hamilton was too stupid to see he would be awesome.

Here's a good aricle covering the situation as of right now.

"The foundation has been set. Now, it is time to build back Rome, brick by brick."

Technically this article is right. UT has talent and though the athletic department is in debt if they could make a proper hire and rally the fanbase they would have the money.

It's also rumored Jim Haslam (owner of the browns and on of UT's biggest boosters) is offering Gruden part ownership of the browns. This is speculation at best but if it's true it would show just how bad they want Gruden. 18m has also just been donated to the athletic department to help. Then there is the 45m 145,000sq-ft facility that was just completed that supposedly rivals (maybe even surpasses) that of NFL facilities.

Despite my unsureness of Gruden's coaching ability there is no doubt he wouldn't be short of talent as his name alone would pull recruits to big orange country.

Re: Tennessee woes

Well Arkansas hired Bret Bielema away from Wisconsin, Auburn found their coach, and sources say Strong is at the top of the list for UT. I for one hope he takes it. He's due a position at a big SEC university considering he's coached in the SEC, is a great recruiter, and has stout defenses. I personally don't see why he woulds stay at louisville and if Jimbo is out of the picture (which i think he is) i hope Strong goes. Though some Cards fans seem to think he'll stay at Louisville despite them moving to the ACC.

Re: Tennessee woes

Supposedly Strong and Gundy have both turned down the job... Where do they go now?

Gruden turned them down..... he was not going to leave ESPN and that 6 million a year salary while only working about 16 weeks out of the year!

Re: Tennessee woes

Larry Fedora (UNC) has been named as a candidate. I'm hoping for Strong as well, but my next hope is we don't settle for someone (like we did for Dooley).

Yes this is old news but i saw that coming. Who would want to go to a stressful job for less money. Though maybe it's all smoke and mirrors Bielema hire was pretty weird as was the Saban hire.

Strong is staying at Louisville idk what the fuck is going on. I really couldn't see Strong staying at Louisville over UT, just baffles me. I just figured he wanted to be a big head coach in the SEC. Both Arkansas and Auburn have great coaches and it seems UT is falling short all three out of our top candidates have refused the offer. I just don't get it. Idk where we go from here unless there is some secret name out there like Brett Bielema did with Arkansas...idk

I guess Fedora is the next step which i wouldn't mind but i wanted Strong after Gruden was off the list.

Re: Tennessee woes

Rumored now is Bo Pelini (Nebraska) and Butch Jones (Cincinnati).

You mean your having trouble understanding why no one wants to take over one of the most messed up programs in the country where if they don't turn turds into national championships in 18 months theyll be fired and have to uproot their family again?

Ok so I exaggerated the timeline but you have to realize how bad you screwed yourselves with firing Dooley. Yeah he wasn't living up to the expectations of the second coming of Saban, but you they just showed that they have no patience and arent willing to give you time to build a proper program. He put in the most complicated defense in football without the best talent for it and you fire him before he really gets a chance to prove it. Did Tennessee fans really buy into Kiffin that hard that they couldnt see how bad he screwed the program?

Trust me, the fans weren't the ones that bought into him. Take that up with the AD. I saw Kiffin for what he was, damaged goods bringing his issues to Tennessee. Hopefully Butch Jones gets a commitment from UT, and in return they get one from him.

Fact is it's not just UT that's changed it's timeline in the SEC it's pretty much an understood three years now. It used to be five, and yes UT's fan base is nuts, same could be said for Bama. They went 10-3 two years ago, if you talk to their fans you would've thought they went 5-7. UT's defense has been pretty crappy for almost 7 years now, fact of the matter was Dooley had a top 25 recruiting class which he couldn't develop properly. No defense or not there is no excuse to be losing to much less talented teams (MSU, Missouri, Vandy) there is an argument both ways. I agree with yours to an extent but for the most part Dooley did exactly what he was hired to do, get recruits in, restore the program to some extent.
