Finally got the TRG42/338LM broke in; then added Titan-QD. One of my buddies brought some Cor-Bon 300gr subsonic rounds ($5+ each!), it made noise than the 10/22 with a sparrow. We pulled one apart; it appears to have Trail Boss powder in it (20.2 grains) but I can't be sure. Does anybody know what Cor-Bon is using because they aren't talking? Any home loads worth trying? Last thing I want to do is get one stuck in the barrel or cause a baffle strike. My full power loads use 101 grns of 50BMG at 2750'/s. Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: 338 Lapua subsonic loads

wanting to use a 338 LM for sub sonic is about as goofy of an idea as one could imagine - 1st the case is what/ 500% too large - 2nd the projectiles are not really suited to the job

something like a .44 special with a heavy cast wadcutter is a much better tool for the job

Re: 338 Lapua subsonic loads

Trail boss has a very distinctive appearance. I've never loaded for this cartridge, but IMR has a formula for reduced loads on their site. When working up subs it's often better to start out in super sonic then work down (stuck bullets are a real pain, but not as bad as a baffle strike - make sure the bullet is stable before shooting through your can).
Sure the case isn't ideal for subsonic loading, but could still be fun. I've got a 300 win mag I'd like to shoot subsonic. It isn't as well suited as my blackout, but I can't realistically change rounds and shoot something at 500 yards with it.

Re: 338 Lapua subsonic loads

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I know a 338LM isn't intended for subsonic applications but I bet you would be impressed, my wife sure was. Zero noise and recoil while tagging 5 out of 5 clay pigeons at 300yds. Most of my shooting is on the 1000yd range and I can keep all the shots inside a 10" ring no problem. Just thought it would be pretty cool to have a rifle capable of tagging prarie dogs at a mile and still have the capability of getting stupid quiet. There must be some application for subsonic 338LM if Cor-Bon is making (and selling) them

Tagging prarie dogs at a mile and subsonic should not even belong in the same thought.

You will run out of elevation adjustment and holdovers in your scope long before a mile with a subsonic load.

At 1050 FPS here is a 250gr load from JBM:

Re: 338 Lapua subsonic loads

Uhhhh........need to clear this up. The subsonic stuff isn't worth a crap past 400m. The long range stuff on varmints is using full power loads (101gr H50BMG with a 300gr Scenar); they also get a little meat on both ends. I use the can while varmint hunting so my buds don't give me the frowny face at the bench. Using subsonic ammo is like having two guns rolled up in one.....with some pretty big elevation adjustments; zero-stop pays for itself in this department. I apologize for any confusion. The 338LM shooters have quite a bandwidth of ballistic choices; my NFA dealer was impressed at the range and even bought one for himself. Also need to figure a couple of things: in the "if momma is happy, everybody is happy" factor and toss in some Rocky Mtn Bullet ballistics the numbers look a bit better. The momma part helps with the shootin budget too!
