    for 600 and 1000 yards?

Need a "budget" scope for now, for my 7-08 build.
I might spring the few extra bucks for the Vortex Viper 6.5-20, but if not, which would you go with in the fixed power?

I've been looking for year end/holiday "deals", but none seem to be had... maybe if I wait another week or two for the last minute sales...if anyone knows of a "deal" in this price range, please PM me..thanks!

I would go with the 16. I have a 20 on one of my 50cals. It is a bit dark compared to higher end glass and mirage may be a factor with the 20. At the 50 shoots we go out to 1.5-2 miles so the more power the better untill you cant see thru the mirage

If your just shooting paper on a static range the 20x is great. I have one i use as a fill in scope for new rifles. I Havent had any problems so far but I think a 16x would be a bit more practical

12X or 16x would be my choice. I have had several 16x and they work great.

Just as a heads up, SWFA has the Sightron SIII 16x and 20x on clearance for $400. I just sold my SWFA 5-20 HD to replace with a Sightron SIII 20x for a 600 and 1000 yard F-T/R 308.

Yes. The range we frequent has lesser target distances (which we don't shoot), but there is nothing between 600, and 1000.

Other than load development, I don't foresee anything else...

    Re: SWFA fixed 16x 0r 20x...

I have a 20x. I am always messing with AR's. So I put mine in a Burris QD AR scope mount. That way when I am working on loads for a rifle or trying a new bullet out with a rifle I can put this scope on and use it to sight in my new load. Works great and I love it.

I'd say go with the 16x. It is more of a do-all scope. The problem I see with the 20x is if you run into mirage you're basically screwed and have to shoot through the blur. In Florida I frequently have to dial my scope to less than 20x. If your were shooting shorter distances the 20 would probably be ok.

That's exactly my concern (FL here as well)...
I have a 6-24 on another rifle and the mirage has at times been almost a non-starter at max magnification at 1000. Currently shooting more at 600 though, getting experience doping- but I do drop some down the ditch for the hell of it (without a lot of success- yet!).

They hold their value well, I'm thinking go with the 20x for now, then sell (or keep it) and get a variable when I'm shooting more at 1000 and funds allow.

    Re: SWFA fixed 16x 0r 20x...

If your bent on a fixed scope, I'd say either a 10 or 12 fixed power.

    Re: SWFA fixed 16x 0r 20x...

ive shot both... i own the 10x, this is my hunting rifle scope
i like the mil quad ret in mil/mil
i like the bars... great for close shots in low light
for known distance target shooting the 12 is perfect
for 70% of a comp a fixed 12 would be fine for me i would not miss higher mag. however i would miss going down in mag to perhaps 5x. then they would be a perfect scope.
i do not like the 3-9x they make.

    Re: SWFA fixed 16x 0r 20x...

    ^^^ I didn't like their 3-9 at all, either.
