So I'm a deputy sheriff in north east Ohio and I go to work. One of the townships that I patrol has a problem. They have a band spanking new township park and playground, and under the sliding board for the kiddies has become a bed for a family of 5 coyote. The township trustees have closed the park. They have also shot down ideas of trapping or poisioning said critters due to liability issues. Local hunters have gleefully offered their services and also have been denied to to, again, liability. So my LT and shift SGT have given me an order: "you're the sniper, just shoot 'em"......

So any way here I am. Patrol car, .45 Glock on the hip, 870 in the rack, M4 type iron sight carbine and the 308 Remington 700 long rifle in the trunk. I have not active been a hunter since '95. Any advise on this? I went and checked out the area and I can set up shooting positions facing south to the west and have good backstop for shots. Distance rangeing from 65 to 450 yards to still make a safe shot. My shift is 1400 to 2200 local time. Any of you predator hunters have any ideas I'd love some guidence on how to safely end this little issue.

Find a decent area to set up where they wont wind you at, but still have a good backstop. Use a rabbit in distress call right before dusk (since you work afternoons) they should come and check it out. You already have got most of the work done for you. You know they are there and where the bed. So know you just need to get them intrested in a meal and serve them up. I personally would use the Rem 700 you have and/or shotgun.

I would love to have your problem lol just saying

Agree with it should be trapped though easy and quick and dont need to worry about the shot.

I agree on the trap.... whole hartedly! But this is the sh*t sandwich I got served. I'm dealing with democrat elecleted officials and lawfull, be it stupid orders. FML........ sigh

Id be asking them to supply me a suppressed gun so you are not making noise the "public" there will be calling the PD about.
Im also thinking like the rest...trap em, not sling lead in town for coyotes.

I believe I know who this is based on the avatar. By chance are there any trees close you could climb with a tree stand and then call them in with a call and have a nice angling downward shot?
Anything close enough you could get them with a bow?

Just some thoughts.

I would say to setup some traps due to the park being closed but that could be a liability issue. You could also build a cage style pig trap around the slide so they can get in but not out and then dispatch them at close range.
If they are coming in that frequent another idea would be to set bait piles where you want them to go (i.e. in front of the backstop. )

Not that the rport of the rifle is huge problem, I'd just go out over the air and advise dispatch that I'm gonna make noise but I still dig the idea.
Shots to the south and west are the safer shots. It's not really "in town" but not that far out either. To the north is the road and housed on the far side. To the east is a large church.

If they're in the area consistently which it sounds like they are just simply ambush them. Switch to something fragnible for this mission and get it done.

A friend of mine does this type of work at golf courses and in areas with people. He uses live cages and checks them morning and before dark. The rules he has to play by is the caged animals must be dispathed with a 22lr. He has a small BOBCAT i think with can and walks out to traps and comes pack with said critter in garbage bag. No one knows what went on they just keep doing what they want and he moves on. He also work with the FFA to control wildlife on small air ports around the area.

For a minuet i was wondering what some high school kids with the Future Farmers of America were going to do with this then realized it was probably a typo and you meant FAA

With your situation, i'd do some low level baiting with a dozen eggs or so. Local eggs, right outta the chicken's ass if possible. (I use them all the time, they don't look like bait to the untrained eye, but they're just as good to a predator)

Place them in a nearby spot that gives you a good safe backdrop and the easiest access route to your vantage point.

It'll take a day or so for the smell to get to them and you should be there in the first hour before dusk through good-n-dark. They will come to investigate.

Or just get a couple 1lb Tannerite cans and pop them two or three days in a row and the 'yotes will move on.

If you don't mind spending a buck or two you could also get some of the "dead coyote" loads an sling those outta the shotgun. They get better range than standard shotgun loads an crush the yotes quite well.

The last thing we need is a story about a deputy shooting a person. No offense bud , but you never know . Play it safe and trap them. I love to shoot predators but that seems a bit risky.

All fantastic input! Thanks to all you guys. I'm going to continue to push the trapping angle to my brass and the powers that be. I have no intent to take an unsafe shot. Orders or not. It's my rifle and my ass if a round goes bad. I hope that cooler heads prevail. And doping out shouts on a playground and makng range cards make me feel like a war criminal.

I'd go with a frangible round in 556 - close distance, you'll be fine. A can of dog food with holes poked in it will keep their attention. It looks like you'll be able to get up fairly close. It doesn't take much to dispatch a dog - a 22 would do the trick, a shotgun with turkey loads are another great option if you can get in close enough. This is of course all presuming that the Trap idea gets shut down.

OR, I have an even better idea - pace/lase out 1500 yards - and get yourself a lifetime of bragging rights for "shooting that coyote at 1500 yards". In that case, I'd go with 300WM or maybe 338lm - ask your sheriff if they'll get you one of those...and of course a can to go along with it - you don't want to worry the neighbors.

LOL... I know how it goes, and more than likely know the kind you work with... take that shit sandwich and serve it right back to em... those coyotes are so pretty, fuzzy, and furry, lets not hurt or kick em out of their new "so called" home..., maybe when they realize all the $$$ they used to build and open this park is a waste because of the family of 5 they'll let you cyanide the bastards.

I agree w/ the frang rounds. That park looks like it has plenty of distance on it. I'd love to see you get them w/ a suppressed .22 LR. No one would know the wiser!

They took up residence in a playground, they are not at this moment shy about people, or they would not have stayed, they may rapidly become so when they start dying, but not yet. If you must shoot, you are not bound by hunting regs, find or erect nearby a suitable back stop and/or elevated shooting platfrom and use earth as backstop, apply bait, ideally large enough size or quantity they cannot simply pick it up and haul it back to the "den", wait spotlight at the ready at dusk, or comeback shortly thereafter, call probably not required. You should be able to do this within .22LR or shotgun range, I would definitely not use the .308 for this.

Traps or poison are much safer options to humans, I dunno how much of a suit could be brought for accidently capturing/killing Fido, I imagine somewhat less than an errant bullet striking a person, and most municipalities have a leash law at parks and the park is "closed" so Fido shouldn't be there.

Well, today I spent a couple hours at the township park. No coyote but did observe a domestic cat, 8 wild turkey and one woman with 2 labs who thought it was ok to cross the caution tape, barriers and 8 foot long "PARK CLOSED" sighns because she "lives across the road"..... OK, I now see why the township shot down the posion and trap ideas..... PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS!
Anyway, the gut pile I left the critters from a fresh F-350 VS Deer was gone and surrounded by coyote tracks. The quest to follow my silly order continues....... Happy Turkey Day, Snipers.

I didn't read through the entire thread, but a semi-auto .22 would be my weapon of choice for the OP's application. Cruise by the park with the rifle out of the window, in the direction of the safe backstop, and open fire until nothing moves or your magazine runs dry.... A single .22 round in the guts of a coyote solves the problem 100% of the time in my experience. I dropped one in its tracks a week ago with a single .17 through the ribs. They aren't very resilient to lead....

Yeah I would bait the use a semi quite rifle (17 HMR) and use one quick headshot to eliminate the Mother. Obviously safely in your line of work is Priority #1 but its only going to get worse.... More pictures!

Rope off an area. Put out road kill or meat like you did before. Signs read "poison in use, stay clear". Case closed. But, you clean these out be prepared for more to come in to the area. They are always moving.

For a bait station, that won't be drug off, take a 5 gallon bucket by one of the local meat cutters and have him fill it with the trimmings he would normally just throw out. Fill the bucket with water and freeze solid. Tke the meat sickle and put it where ever you want to bit them into. They will work like crzy to get at the scraps, but the block is too big for them to drag off, and will last quite a while.
