wherever I may roam...
Anyone running a Stockade stock? I am looking for a replcement for the factory tupperware on my model 11 .308. I want to take the sporter barrel to 16", but also have a factory heavy barrel that will likely follow. The rifle has a factory dbm, so I will need whatever stock inletted, as I've yet to find any stocks alreay inletted for this.
The rifle is mainly a hunter, but will also go to precision rifle classes with me.
Any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated.
Eric

Re: Savage stock question

Stockade makes good stuff, I have two of his stocks on order right now, their PD/T and Rollover thumbhole (though I might change the thumbhole). Stockade is well known in the Savage world as making quality stocks and Kevin Rayhill is one of the most knowledgeable Savage Smiths out there. What stock did you have in mind, and what contour is the heavy barrel?

Re: Savage stock question

I am liking the looks of the Woodchuck, and the heavy barrel is a factory fp takeoff I picked up from another Hide member. I also like the Mule deer as it resembles a stock I am looking at for my Savage fv. 22.

Re: Savage stock question

I had one awhile ago, it was an out of the mold stock. It did not need too much work to get it looking good. My gripe is at the time they called it a full length bedding block type stock, mine wasn't. At least in the termsof a hs or b&c it was not. It had pillars and a little aluminum in the lug area, but no solid aluminum block that had a recoil lug area and cylindrical aluminum bedding . It was pretty much a fiberglass stock that had pillars, maybe there was a aluminum skeleton under it like a b&c. I beleive mine was a varmint thumbhole but the barrel channel was made for a .675" barrel at the forend tip. It was nice when uit was finished and fully bedded, but i was expecting a full aluminum bedding block like hs or b&c

^^^ LOL. I'll go along with that. Ask him what he thinks of SSS and then hold the phone about a foot away from your ear.

I bought a money saver Long Range Benchrest from him for a 600 YD IBS rifle. I was pleased with how it turned out.

Re: Savage stock question

i have a varmint/tactical stockade. i also have a hunting stock from bell & carlson. everything is better on the stockade. i also had him add his d etachable magazine bottom metal. it works well to. now for the bad. 6 month wait for the economy stock. if the wait was shorter I would order another today. i am going with a mcrees this week. hope i like it as well. i would not buy another bell and carlson. they are not bad and will keep the one i have. just think you can get better for a little more.

my opinion

Re: Savage stock question

Pretty much what everyone else said is spot on. Kevin loves to talk and the wait time seems like forever. I sent my 243 to him back in June to put it in a new stock, add his bottom metal, and put on a new barrel. Hopefully have it back by Christmas, but I dont mind waiting if it comes back shooting as good as everyone says his rifles shoot.

It is my understanding that the aluminum bedding runs under the barrel channel, so you can't really see it, just take a look at this picture:

You can see the barrel channel, then there is maybe a quarter inch of fiberglass between the channel and the aluminum bedding.

Kevin Rayhill also has and makes a wide assortment of parts for Savage rifles, I also have his bolthandle, recoil lug, and a Benchmark barrel he made for me and all are excellent quality, hes my go to guy when I'm looking for something for my Savage.

Re: Savage stock question

I have the PD/T stock on my 10FP in .308. I got one of the very first center feed Savages when they came out and nobody was making a stock for them at that time. Kevin set me up, though. He was also able to make the stock to my weight specs (as heavy as possible, as I wanted this for a more "static" type of shooter, rather than a carrying gun). The wait seemed like forever, but it was worth it. When I got the stock, I bedded it with Devcon and quickly saw about a 40% improvement in my groups, when compared to the factory "tupperware" stock. It's a very solid rig and I'm very pleased with it.
