Just wanted to get on here and say thanks to all of the people posting on the hide. I recently got approval from the boss i.e. the wife to buy my first custom gun. If the website owners could only see how many hours I put into these forums searching and cross referencing information given to me, the wife has complained multiple times that she wished she got as much attention as the hide recently. I had always considered myself a fairly decent marksman and knowledgeable in shooting until I took on the challenge trying to figure out exactly what I wanted, expected, caliber choice, glass, trigger etc. There has been a wealth of knowledge that has really helped me through out this on going process(still haven't got caliber or rifle truly picked out yet). Hopefully in the near future I will see you all at competitions and show off a new rifle that I can really be proud of.
I did have one question though. I have been through the forums and it really seems like a stalemate to if the 6.5 creedmore is worth the time and effort. I will be using the rifle for primarily hunting and hopefully shooting competitions if my pay raises keep coming they way they are expected to. I am trying to get an overall great rifle that will be used for all applications and is the first gun I grab. Going hunting out west for elk, prairie dog, deer in SC, going to the 1k range, steal target challenges etc. I know it isn't possible to have the perfect round for every situation but I am wanting a 3 or 4k rifle that I grab 99% of the time out of to case to do everything with and I have been leaning very heavily towards this round.

Re: Intro and thanks

IMO you are not going about this correctly.

Strongly suggest that you convince your wife that you must have a rifle for each purpose, plus at least one backup for each just in case of unforseen problems.

In other words, you really need at least 2 good tactical rifles for ranges up to 600m, 2 for ranges to 1000m, and 2 for ranges up to 1500m.

Then, you need a suitable set of rifles for varmint hunting.

And, a suitable set of rifles for big game hunting.

You will be much happier if you take my advice about this.

Re: Intro and thanks

lol, yeah I have tried that approach she didn't quite buy it. Hard to convince the CEO when she is a beginner shooter as well and can see what is in the case already. We came to the agreement I can start getting a custom build once every about 3 or 4 years and in between more of the standard off the factory line rifles. Damn a firefighter salary or I would probably spend 100k in a weekend on rifles.

Re: Intro and thanks

The 6.5 Creed is a good cartridge. Some like the 7mm-08 as an "all-purpose" round. Hard to beat the .308 for availability of factory loads. Probably just depends on what you want to do with it. Are you intending to handload, or will you need factory stuff?

Re: Intro and thanks

factory load at least for another 3 to 5 years. I want to get into handloads at some point but to expensive for start up costs as of right now. I will mainly us the rifle for deer hunting here in South Carolina, ground hog hunting and showing off a good stick while in ohio, and hopefully start shooting competition again if I can get into a local gun club that has long range ranges up to 800. I would also like to start doing some of the tactical competitions I have read about in the competition sections.

Re: Intro and thanks

I'm in a similar position to the OP...need a multi-purpose rifle well suited to hunting.

Wanting something a bit lighter that handles better in the woods and treestand, my existing 26" varmint contour 260 barrel will either be replaced with a 22" light varmint contour or it'll get chopped to 20-22".

A 20" 6.5 Creedmoor should get Hornady 140gr A-Max loads pretty close to 2700fps, which still gives it a sizable advantage over any factory 308 ammo.
