Im new on the hide here and an in need to find a very good gunsmith to put threads on my H-S tactical take down rifle.I have two barrels for it, a 308 and 300 mag.I should have put threads on it when I got it 11 yr ago but I did know MI was going to give us the choice for us in MI to buy a suppressor.Any how the only catch is that the forend of the barrels are glass bedded to the barrel and H-S will not do the job.

But they will put a new barrel on for $1500 and 2-4 month wait. I just got my first suppressor about 2 weeks ago and want a 30 cal suppressor for my H-S. If you check the website to see what im talking about.I would like to get some direction to talk to the right person can do it RIGHT with PRECISION.

Re: Need very good smith to put on threads on H-s TTD

Looks like he needs supsonic threads. They're the best.

Those glass bedded barrel forends sound pretty trick too.

Oh and that $1500 rebarrel job? Sign me up for a half dozen of those.

Great first post BTW.

Re: Need very good smith to put on threads on H-s TTD

I'd be willing to do it but understand there's some things you need to be made crystal clear on prior to this ever moving forward.

1. IF (because I don't have it right in front of me to verify) the barrel is indeed glued permanently to the forend of the stock it will have to be removed from the forend first. IF this IS in fact the situation, then IT WILL need to be glued/bedded to the forend again afterward during the assembly.

Reason(s): In my lathe (an $85K slant bed CNC tool room lathe) I cannot physically install the barrel in the machine due to the stock being attached. Even if I could, I wouldn't because to generate the proper speeds/feeds when threading/crowning a barrel it would mean spinning the barrel at an rpm that's going to cause the machine to shake like a washer machine on spin cycle with a cinder block in it.

Because I'd have to break this down it can likely mean a couple things. It's very possible the paint may chip/split along the show line edge of the stock. In fact I'd count on it doing this.
If it doesn't then I can say with great certainty it will need to be painted again because the only safe way to split the two apart is with heat. The barrel gets warmed up enough to cause the adhesion between the two parts to break down. From there you peel it out.

Long story short:

The barrel has to come off
The stock will have to be painted over again
The barrel will have to be coated/blued/parkerized (whatever HS did at the factory) again.
The barrel(s) will have to be bedded to the forend again afterward.

Fortunately I have a full service shop that includes a paint booth and all the paint/coating stuff on the shelf. The guy that setup H/S's entire painting operation is someone I've known for about 9 years. I KNOW exactly how they do it and I have all the materials on the shelf to replicate the finish.

I also have the tooling/equipment to put it back to a 100% factory original look once completed.

If you'd like to discuss it further, please give me a call. I'll generate an estimate as we talk and email it to you prior so that were both on the same page with everything.

Regardless, good luck and hope you find your solution.

Chad I will give you a call very soon and would like to about cost and other things.Yes being on the same page is very important. Im not to worry about paint chips as much as keeping the kevlar forend in one peice and guling it back on right.we will talk next week on monday.

Re: Need very good smith to put on threads on H-s TTD

Chad can you put up picture when you get things going on my rifle.I think this could be good for your shop. Also I like to see the progress as you go alone from 1500 miles away. The UPS ETA for my rifle to show up is tues the 27 at the end of the day.Last I would like to know what a full paint job would cost and a muzzle brake.

No sweat.

Our UPS deliveries are in the am so I should have it that morning or the following.

Once it arrives I'll get in touch with you to notify and to discuss the additional options you mentioned.

Re: Need very good smith to put on threads on H-s TTD

Final Assembly:

The "kid" (my son) has got a serious H/O for this rifle. He's diggin the take down feature. So, I let him do the majority of the work. He painted/ceracoated the parts after I'd threaded the muzzles and fitted thread rings.

We've got one barrel (the 300WM) all done. Bedding is curing. We'll fit up the 2nd (308) in the morning.

Thread rings were setup to use the same spanner wrench as the barrels do. It's not quite right in that the diameters are different, but with a little thumb pressure they'll come right off/on.

One of the tricks to these things is bedding the forend with the barrel attached to the action. Failure to do so doesn't ensure a firm lockup upon final assembly.

So far so good. We'll have the other done in the am.

Thanks again Chris for letting us do this for you.
