I'm building my first AR and when I torque my nut to 30 ft/lbs the gas tube does not line up. If I back it off the nut seems to loose. I have gone up to 45 ft/lbs with a ways to go before I clear the barrel nut and align the gas tube. How high can I go?

Thanks in advance for your advice

Re: Barrel Nut Torque

I was in a similar situation and what I did is I ground off the tooth of the bbl nut that was getting in the way.

Re: Barrel Nut Torque

Is this barrel nut new or being reused from a previous build? If it is new, torque it to the recommended 30 lbs, unscrew and repeat 3 times and then tighten to the next hole.

If it is an old reused nut, be careful. If you feel it wont continue tightening to the next hole, the threads may be at there limit to stretch and you may cause damage. As above when you tighten the initial 3 times you are effectively stretching and "setting" the threads. If this has been done several times already it just wont give anymore and may strip the threads. Either the receiver threads or the nut threads.
