AR10 Platform - 260 Rem vs. 6.5 Creedmor decision

Just a couple questions:

1) Any difference in feeding reliability in AR10 platform between these two calibers? I assume I can use regular 308 mags?

2) I do not reload and have no plans to do so. Which caliber has factory match grade ammo for sale and at what price? In .308 I use Federal Gold Metal Match 175gr - what would be the equivalent in each caliber?

Thanks!

Re: AR10 Platform - 260 Rem vs. 6.5 Creedmor decision

1) I know a gentleman who was having tips of his 6.5CM bullets shaved off when they were entering the chamber (he was using DPMS factoy mags). Don't quote me on this, but IIRC, he opened the feed lips on the front of the mag to allow the bullet a more upward trajectory when entering the chamber. I am not certain if swapping to PMAGS would have remedied this issue.

2) Have you seen the price of quality factory .260??? (123gr Scenars from Cor Bon's, I believe 20 are about 55.00) If you don't reload, your decision is made. 6.5CM...the Hornady factory ammo is outstanding. Additionally, I work at a large(r) retailer, at the gun counter. We have metric shit tons of ammo available, none that is .260 match. However, if you need CM, there is no shortage...from my observations, that is a common issue.

If you don't reload, 6.5cm is the clear winner. Hornady match ammo for $25 per 20 on the high side.

Re: AR10 Platform - 260 Rem vs. 6.5 Creedmor decision

I'm researching my next .308 frame AR build myself and I am researching both the .260 and 6.5 calibers. From what I understand the .260 benefits more from a bolt gun where you can set the round longer than what you are limited to with a pmag. This favors the 6.5 which allows a longer bullet to fit into a pmag. I don't know if the OAL issue is relevant or not. I've read reports of excellent results with both calibers I. The AR platform.

As a reloaded the availability of quality brass (Lapua) has me convinced that the .260 is the way to go. If I didn't reload I would go with the 6.5

I'm shooting .260 in a DPMS. A few issues to start, but now sub .6 ish. You can have reloads custom made pretty reasonably. Also Southwest Ammo has good .260 at about $1.65 per.

Re: AR10 Platform - 260 Rem vs. 6.5 Creedmor decision

I have a Fulton Armory 6.5CM, the gun is far better then my skill currently and always impresses me at the range.

My steel 10 round DPMS mags can have a longer over all length round then the Pmag 20 round I have. Both mags are regualar .308 mags.

I have fired both the 120gr and 140gr Hornady Amax match rounds. Both fire well but the 140 was more stable for me. I can get the ammo for $24 a box at the gun show or $30 at the small shops. Id say the equal to 175 FGMM is the 140gr AMAX match. DO NOT use Hornady Superformance ammo at all, it is ment for bolt actions.

FWIW - I have heard that the older design AR-10s - the ones that do not take the PMAG (AR10B I think) can accept slightly longer rounds than the newer AR10A. If you are pushing the limits of OAL you might want to research this a bit. Good luck.

Re: AR10 Platform - 260 Rem vs. 6.5 Creedmor decision

I have not shot my 260 ar much yet but I measured the jammed COL for my Lilja barrel and mag COL. Using 140g Amax bullets and ASC mags I get a minimum jump of .035" (that leaves enough room in the mag for the variance in the hornady bullet lengths). The jump is a bit longer when loading to the pmag max length as there is not as much room in the pmags.

Anyone have numbers for their other 260's or a creedmoor?
