I am in the beginning stage of a .280rem build. I will be using it for long range target and occasionally whitetail deer hunt.i dont do any stocking, just spotting while deer hunting, so weight is not an issue. The action is a m700LA. What is everyones thoughts?
Barrel length?
barrel Twist?
bullet weight?

Re: .280rem build?

Welcome.

There is lots and lots and lots of info on 280 builds out here already. Go to Google and type in "Snipershide 280" you will get lots of posts and good info.

One other thing to note would be a percentage of target to hunting you plan to do. 10% and 50% hunting are two different things.

There is also a whole section in the Reloading forum on 280 and other 7mm offerings. Just see what everyone is using and results.

Re: .280rem build?

Get yourself a Remington Varmint contour, at least 24" (I would go 26"), 1/8.5 twist. For target shooting, go heavy >160gr. >130gr is plenty for whitetail deer

^ this is great advise, but I'd go 24" and shoot 162 Amaxs at everything.

Re: .280rem build?

I shot a .280 for a while. If I were building one to shoot LR steel and critters too, and weight weren't an issue...

your 700 LA
24" #4 or 5 (maker of your choice, but I'd want it to go .700" at the muzzle). Twist it 1-9"
McMillan Game Scout or Manners MCS-T
Leup 3.5-10x40
Throat for the 162 A-Maxes... they're cheap and hammer shit.

Re: .280rem build?

My next build is going to be a .280 as well. Uses will be long range hunting (deer, bear, hogs) as well as targets. I want something with a bit more punch at extended distance, so I'm thinking 180 VLD hunting pills at 2800 fps. That would give 1000+ f/lbs at 1000 yards.

As for the specs I have in mind; trued Remington 700 long action, bartlien 1:9 twist rem varmint contour, McMillan A3 in gap camo, old style 700 take off trigger, PT&G stealth bottom metal with accurate mags, all metal cerakoted in OD green.

Re: .280rem build?

Just a question for you guys that have them.... whats the main advantages of the 280 over a 7mm mag if your starting from scratch ? (obviously the mag has more recoil and the magnum bolt face plays a part if you already have an action in hand. Anything else ?

280 is easier to load for, cheaper to shoot, better barrel life, more flexibility in loads, less recoil, has potential for better accuracy being non-belted..... Just off the top of my head.

Re: .280rem build?

My 280 AI has basically zero recoil. I love shooting it. Put it in a Manners MCS T5 90% carbon fiber. I just got back from a 4 day hunt carrying it, and it was a breeze.

Re: .280rem build?

I would also consider the 280 AI. Gives you a little extra if you want it and if not, you dont lose anything. Good brass from nosler too. I agree with the guys above, sling the 162 Amax at everything and you will have a good hunting load and wont have to remember any different dope for a different bullet or load. I would go 26" for the barrel and if you find that is too much, cut it down to 24.
