about to re barrel my 7mm mag model 70.... im leaning tward the 300 win for the most part because of from what i have heard barrel life, not to mention it uses a significantly smaller amount of powder. so more reloads per 1 lb of poweder..

is the 300 RUM really that much of a barrel burner when compared to the 300 win? im just getting into the magnums... your thoughts?

I say go RUM, looking at the Hodgdon manual and from what I see you can load a RUM on the light side and have the performance of a maxed out WM and still have room if you feel like pushing them hard.
300WM
200 gr nos ab
Retumbo MAX load 78 grains compressed
2872 fps
52,100CUP

300RUM
200 gr nos ab
Retumbo STARTING load 89 grains
2904 fps
56,400CUP
MAX load 95.5 Compressed
3048 fps
62,400CUP

I for one get annoyed at people pushing the "you dont want that its a barrel burner". Who gives a shit I say, If the cartridge gives the performance you want, does it really matter? If you go with something less, will it leave you wanting more?

For me, its simple math
caliber + bullets I want to run + FPS I want = Cartridge I will use

Old school winmag easily hands down.

Once fired gmm brass pops up for sale from le guys.

300wm +208amax will do anything you need very well

well sonic... i see what you mean but my thoughts on your response is do i need it? when will i be hunting anything past 700+ yards (where the RUM shines) im a Specialist in the army i cant go buy a new barrel every 2 years or so..i might be able to hunt once a year depending on where im gettin stationed..this is going to be a paper puncher on the occasional hunt....

now the flip side... you cant touch the numbers that the RUM puts out... and if i may ask is there any evidence that the barrel life is significantly less in a RUM or is it just all a old wifes tale?

If most had decent field-craft, the need for a long reaching short barrel life stick would be not.

A slow rum will last just as long as a fast win mag. RUM all the way around, brass last 8-12 reloads and I have one gun with over 3000 rounds through it, but it is a pistol. A 210 berger at 3040 out of a pistol. Win mags are pigs or for guys with recoil issues. Last parting thought, the rum is supersonic with the 230's to 2400 ish at 6500da, is your win mag?

I understand where your coming from. Is the RUM gona go through a barrel faster than a WM? I have no dout it will, how much sooner just depends. I dont get out to shoot all that often and I have more than a few guns to choose from, so It is gona take me longer to use up a barrel than John Doe who has one rifle and goes to the range every weekend.
I think my math still holds true for any situation, You just need to decide which round will work better for you. Seems like they both will put you where you want to be. Weigh your options and pick the best round for YOUR NEEDS
