i have 3 RRA ARs.

i was told these are not "milspec".

what exactly is not "milspec" about them?

and i know, the buzz word "milspec" was invented only to sell more stuff.

Re: rock river ARs not milspec

Mil Spec refers to being built on the Technical Data Package specs that Colt used to build on. Things like chrome lined barrels, 1-7 twist, MPI bolt, "F" marked front sight post, etc are all specs associated with it being Mil Spec. Some find value in it and others do not. The only time I find not being Mil Spec is an issue is related to the BCG being of lesser quality and the gas key not being staked properly. Also if the lower is machined out of spec it you may have issues using certain mags.

Re: rock river ARs not milspec

Just to say "milspec" is a barf.com term. RRA is a great Co. that produces some of the most accurate AR's there is for the $. Buffer tubes, and bcg's are a cpl things that come to mind. "Milspec" is the term used for items such as buffer tubes, (diameter, and how the threads are made) They are Commercial, and I own both and have yet to have one break. I have several DD, BCM's, Noveske's, LMT's, Wilson C, Les baer, etc. etc. The bcg "milspec" uses grade 8 fasteners and hardware, and are MPI, and shot peened. I have an RRA that has been through 2 Carbine classes, and a BCM that has been through 1. DD, Noveske, and more use the FA bolt carrier, that RRA doesn't, and if it's a Car, they run a H buffer. Which does help on recoil, and brass life, but unless you are taking one to battle, and don't wanna clean your gun,an RRA is great, and would probably still work, but they are built to tighter tolerances, which is why my RRA's out shoot my BCM's and LMT's, and the fact that I don't want a chrome lined brrl to shoot tight groups. Please don't get hung up on the "MilSpec" term. RRA, Bushy, S&W and many more are gtg. I have walked through many machine shops, and saw the "Colt" roll mark in many of them. If you do want to rid your RRA and get a Pony, I'll take em off your hands.

+1 (F marked fsb, staked bcg (a must) staked castle nuts, buffers, and tubes, etc. There are Co's out there that are building sub par equip, such as elite arms (junk) but RRA is GTG.

Re: rock river ARs not milspec

Built to Department of Defense military specification means an item (say a rifle) is built to a technical standard (drawings and blueprints, within tolerances), and will or does, indeed, pass acceptance inspection and test requirements.

These are examples of the standards an M4 Carbine MUST pass to be accepted by the military (not Justice, as specified for the Rock River DEA contract): http://www.ar15.com/content/manuals/m4a1milspec.pdf , http://www.ar15.com/content/manuals/m4a1adendum.pdf

If an individual or group of weapons (as specified) doesn't pass it doesn't pass. In the real world that contractor is then liable to penalty or contract cancellation.

A commercial manufacturer can produce a "Like" item, but since Uncle Sam's military inspectors aren't holding him to a standard for payment or legal action he can substitute parts or components that might not pass more rigorous testing. He doesn't have to build to any standard drawings but his own, nor pass ANY inspections to sell to anyone.

Re: rock river ARs not milspec

RRA won the DEA contract a few years back. So I got a RRa Varmint 20", and have put about 2K more into it, and own 5 223WYLDE RRA's, 2 6.8's,and several uppers, that my FFL sold me for cost. Also have the new AK version, and 458 thumper. Never had a problem out of my RRA's. I broke an extractor and gas key in my 3rd Car class, on a "believe it or not" Colt 6920. But it was a hard 1500 rds.
