Gunsmithing M40A1 Remington trigger modification

Re: M40A1 Remington trigger modification

A Bridgeport milling machine and a 3/8" 4 fluted end mill cutter.

Re: M40A1 Remington trigger modification

Am assuming a good mini-mill (e.g., Taig, etc.) would work? Also, any photos of a milled trigger vs. the dremeled photo on the M40A1 thread?

Re: M40A1 Remington trigger modification

Mine is not to spec as I wanted to have more of the bolt release left. I milled some off the trigger guard to give a bit more clearance up front. I don't have a pic of the trigger out of the stock but, here is a shot of how much I left of the bolt release when I fitted the bottom metal.

and here is one from the other side.

Are you building a spec build? George from Gap said...

Re: M40A1 Remington trigger modification

RAD ... thanks for the photos, I appreciate it and they are a help.

I have 9-10 months before my action gets shipped of to Hart for an M40A1 barrel install and action blueprinting, so I have time to decide what I want to do about the bottom metal/trigger. With this, I may purchase a mini-mill ... could use the tool anyway and it would make it much easier to do the required mill work.

A key reason the Marines went with the Win bottom metal, based on what I have read, is the flimsy bottom metal supplied from Remington. With the quality bottom metal options available for Rem 700s today, this is no longer the case, so am still deciding on whether to build a spec-build or a more modern interpretation.

Re: M40A1 Remington trigger modification

What is your intended purpose for this rifle?

Are you building on a return stock?

I find the ergonomics of the stock are not ideal for shooting optics without modifying the cheek piece in some way. The internal magazine is a disadvantage for tactical competitions and the weight of the barrel is not ideal for a hunting platform.

Unless you are building this rifle for nostalgic reasons, I wouldn't recommend specking it out like that.
