Anyone know what would be a good IR light for a helmet mount to use in conjuction with a PVS-14 for mid distance....meaning better than the POS IR light built into the PVS-14?

Re: Best Helmet mounted Infrared Light

Hi papa
Just got my pvs -14 from Tnvc and have a question,my kit came with a demist shield.I have no idea what it is for and do I need to install it on the pvs-14? I looked in the Manuel and it does not say to much about it,not sure how to put it on and why?

Re: Best Helmet mounted Infrared Light

No, you don't have to use the demist shield, I don't know too many people who ever use them for their intended purpose, which is to prevent condensation from building on the optic during rapid temperature changes. If your eyes tend to put off a lot of heat and you find your optics fogging then try the demist shields out. Otherwise, leave them in the carry bag.

Re: Best Helmet mounted Infrared Light

Thank you papa, you are the best NV friend I have and answers all my questions, when I attached the L g-24 mount the the vas shroud there is a little wobble from left to right,is this normal?it only moves when I force it a little.Should there be any moment with the mount to the helmet? I did put on the 30 mm IR filter on the the pvs -14 also per your instructions.Did a test run in the closet and it is ausome!!!!! Can't wait till tonight to walk around.

Sometimes there is a little wiggle if you try and move the arm but it shouldn't be excessive. Make sure you have it properly seated and that its clicked or locked in to the vas shroud. The use of the bungees will help stabilize and reduce any wobble that you may have.

Re: Best Helmet mounted Infrared Light

Thank you papa,do you have any pics of where you attach the laynard too and the bungees ,I attached my laynard to the battery cap wire, could not fiind any other place to attach, also on the bungee cords .I have on order the bungee cords from http://www.optactical.com/index.html for 15.00 dollars,I also ordered the Velcro for my helmet from ops core. The last 2 things I need is the counter balance weights for my helmet and a laser .

Re: Best Helmet mounted Infrared Light

Ron, do you have a single pvs 14 or did you get the dual 14s that connect to form goggles?

You should have a lanyard hole on the body of the NVG be it one tube or two. If you have 2ea tubes you will have 2 lanyard holes, one on each tube. Did you say you had bought the wilcox lanyard too? If you did, it will work best with a one tube set up.

What you can do is run a small piece of gutted 550 cord through the lanyard hole to create a very small loop that the bungee hook can easily attach to although running one bungee to the one loop may feel awkward, but gie it a try and see if it works for you or not. The other bungee won't be used unless you have 2 tubes/goggles like the BNVD goggle that uses 2ea 14s

Ron, insert the gutted 550 cord or similar strong cord in the lanyard hole as I described above and you should be able to attach the wilcox lanyard or 1 of the bungees.

Re: Best Helmet mounted Infrared Light

Yes,got the pvs-14 hooked up to my helmet with the wilcox vas shroud and mount, walked around last night with it on for fun.The image is very clear and bright.i have one very small blemish at 4 o'clock on the outer margin which is not to bad.the only thing I need is the counter balance weights, the helmet is riding down on forehead towards pvs.I am waiting on my Velcro before I get the counter balance put on helmet.

Re: Best Helmet mounted Infrared Light

Ron,

You'll need to drill out the hole just a hair larger to get the hook for the wilcox hook for the lanyard to fit. Just go slowly. No biggie.

For a light, I'm really liking the SureFire M1. Walked around for hours with it. Worked well and wasn't too bright or dim, just about right. The VTAC mount works well and is lightweight. Think it's about $110 from TNVC plus 24.95 for the VTAC mount.

Re: Best Helmet mounted Infrared Light

Hi maverick
I did purchase the surefire m-1 but it has not arrived yet for a helmet mount,I also purchased the vtac adapter for the light..Are you talking about those 2 little holes where the lanyard would attach to the pvs-14,I tried to attach the wilcox hook into the holes and the hook is to large. Will I mess up the pvs-14 by drilling out the hole larger. Also papa said to use a small wire and make a circle through the hole and then attach the hook to the wire.
Thank you for the help on the light and lanyard ideas.

Re: Best Helmet mounted Infrared Light

Ron,

Just as easy to secure a wire to it without messing with a drill and the existing attachment point. It sounds like your battery housing is a little different than my ANPVS-14 L3 Mil Spec.

Re: Best Helmet mounted Infrared Light

Hi maverick
I attached a wire through the laynard hole and then attached the wilcox to that, works great.
Thanks for your help
