OK
Hey yall. Im building me a rifle and I finally have it narrowed down to two calibers 6.5x47 lapua and 260 rem. My rifle is going to be just like the m40a5 but either chambered in 6.5x47 lap or 260 rem. I wanna know which one yall think is better and why. I also reload. Im going to be using it for shooting from 50 yards to 1000 yards. Ill be deer hunting with this rifle and be shooting steel. Im building this rifle in two weeks. I would really appreciate it folks. I would also like to see some pictures of yalls 6.5x47 lapuas and 260 rem. Thank yall.

There are literally hundreds of pages compare/ contrasting these two cartridges as well as the 6.5 creed.use the search box to the right of your post. Your on the right track either will be great. Now get to readin theres tons to learn on here

Sooners,

Basically all the same, or the difference not many will notice

You can get more 6.5x47's onto a flight if that is important to you?

Re: 6.5x47 lapua vs 260 rem

The eternal 6.5mm debate:

Ford v. Chevy. v. Dodge. They'll all haul a load for you...

Lapua 260 Rem brass tends to be a bit cheaper than x47 brass, and 6.5 Creedmoor loaded ammo is fairly inexpensive and more widely available than either the 260 or 6.5x47.

Re: 6.5x47 lapua vs 260 rem

Hey Sooner,

I have just decided on the 6.5x47 myself. I like the theory of using a small primer, which is said to relate to more uniform ignition. Also, the case being shorter gives you more wiggle room if your mags are only 2.850". I have read where some people were getting great velocities with RL-17 & 140s (2900+), so I don't see much loss in performance between the two. Goodluck with your choice!

Oh yeah, Go Pokes! Lol

Check out 6.5x55, as well. A lot of the data you see for it will be short-changed, since it was originally developed for the old M96 Mauser action. However, in a modern rifle that can handle the pressure, it's potential is much greater and it shouldn't be overlooked. Brass is fairly easy to find, as well.

Re: 6.5x47 lapua vs 260 rem

Is a 9in cock better than a 9 1/4 in cock? Both get the job done. Very similar sticks. Id be happy to have either.

Impressive way to come out of the closet.....kudos

Re: 6.5x47 lapua vs 260 rem

On a serious note, I looked at both calibers back in Nov. I decided on going with the 6.5x47. It fits my style of shooting better. Ballistics are great, its very efficient on powder, and there are great projectiles available. My buddies use their 6.5x47s out to 1000 on groundhogs with great success. On par with our 6mmBR's. But a lot of that has to do with who builds the gun. My buddies have also taken numerous white tails with the 6.5. Its a great gun. But so is the 260... you cant go wrong with either.

Lapua brass for that is actually pretty reasonable as well. Don't have one but plan on building a 6.5x55 in a long action.

Yeah, why is that? Lapua sells the 6.5x55 for $70/100 but than the 6.5L and 260R go for $100/100...

Re: 6.5x47 lapua vs 260 rem

Not sure. Someone pointed that out to me as well as the ballistics on the 6.5 Swede and what you could do with it in a long action. Both surprised me.

Yes, it is. I should have my Tikka Sporter in 6.5x55, in a few weeks. I could have got the .260, but the ballistics and the available/reasonable Lapua brass swayed me.

I can only guess that it's a supply/demand issue. In the U.S. market, at least, 6.5x55 is usually overlooked, while .260 and 6.5 Lapua are kind of the "flavors of the week" that everyone is after.

Re: 6.5x47 lapua vs 260 rem

I'd guess European-based Lapua probably sells Swede brass across the Atlantic like the 308 sells here...

Re: 6.5x47 lapua vs 260 rem

I don't think lapua would have created the 6.5x47 if it wasnt an improvement/benefits over the 260. Do you think the guys over at Lapua are a bunch of fucking idiots?

6.5x47 was designed for European 300m highpower competition to be "better" than the 6mmBR Norma in terms of ballistics & barrel life while being similarly efficient.

I seriously doubt the 260 was even really on their radar.

Why didn't they just use a 260??

Re: 6.5x47 lapua vs 260 rem

I have studied this for three months and decided .260. I really don't think there is a wrong answer. Good luck with your quest?

Really? What's the rule on flying with ammo? Why more 6.5x47?

Re: 6.5x47 lapua vs 260 rem

Weight limit on ammo 11 pounds. Really sucks when flying with the big stuff in the neighbor hood of .404J and .458 Lott.
