Yet another .338 Lapua question

I put it here because my goal is long range (out to 1 mile). Is 2800 fps with a 300 gr bullet a realistic figure out of a 32" barrel?

My 26" savage 110ba shoots 300gr Bergers at 2800+

Re: Yet another .338 Lapua question

Should not be a problem.... I am running 300 Scenars @ 2750 out of 24.5" Barrett MRad..... I have let a few guys who have never shot past 300 yards shoot it at a mile and they now have hits at a mile!

Re: Yet another .338 Lapua question

You will have no problem at all. My load is 2850 out of a 27" AI AX338. Every other .338LM I've shot/loaded for has been 2800+ easily.

Assuming you're in Wyoming like me, 1 mile is really not difficult at all for .338LM at our elevation (6500'+) You'll get there easily.

Re: Yet another .338 Lapua question

2840fps is what I run 300gr Berger OTM's, from a 28" Bartlein. Easy to go past 1760 yards.

Re: Yet another .338 Lapua question

No need to go longer than 30" and i would go with a 28 inch barrel.

Re: Yet another .338 Lapua question

What are ya'lls load to get that? I'm just working up a load for mine. 28" Bartlein and I'm getting 2650fps currently with the 300s but I haven't started pushing it yet. I'm running 89.5g of Retumbo.

Re: Yet another .338 Lapua question

Hitting a mile with 338lm is not that hard. I can do it with my 20" AIAX pushing Hornady 285's at 2650 fps.

Actually I am in Wyoming. Cheyenne to be exact. Setting up targets at 1 mile will not be that difficult. Hitting them might be another story.

Well every barrel is different so obviously use caution when approaching max loads.

Having said that, of the dozen or more .338LM's I've owned, I've never had to stay as low as 89.5gr. With 300gr SMK's, all my final loads have been in the 92.0-95.0gr of Retumbo. Both CCI 250's and Fed 215M's. Most nice custom barrels I just load up 94.0gr and head out. A "load work up" is rarely even necessary as that load seems to shoot as good as I need it to.

My most recent .338, an AX338LM, I had some moderate pressure signs at 94.0 and ended up backing down to 92.0gr Retumbo, Fed 215M's. 2850fps.

Retumbo is the only powder I use for .338LM anymore.

YMMV

Re: Yet another .338 Lapua question

Thanks VTi. I only have 40 rounds down the barrel and am just taking it slow getting familiar with the rifle. I was planning on cranking it up a little this weekend. I'm not chasing fps as much as accuracy which I seem to of found at 89.5 but I am curious just how far I can push it before backing off.

Re: Yet another .338 Lapua question

No problem Layton.

I agree about the accuracy "node" to a certain extent, depending on the ranges you will be shooting. If you're primarily staying under 1000-1200y or so, a slower load that is extremely consistent may be desirable. However, if you're pushing past a mile then the extra 150-200fps will definitely trump any small group variance at visible at 100y, simply because it will be slightly more forgiving of bad wind calls.

I usually try for a combination of both. I find max safe velocity first, then I'll back down *just slightly* looking for a very accurate load with low velocity SD.
