Would like to make up a batch of my own M855. Where can I procure the bullets? Google has turned up a few old AR15 threads of pulled bullets, but not much else. Wideners has a listing for 5000 pc units that's out of stock, but I don't want that many anyways.

Thanks,
Ray

You may have to wait until the panic settles down. I know a guy that had a good source on them, and I will check to see if he still has his supply.

Oy, the nutjobs are snatching up all the reloading supplies too?!? ...sigh. Thanks NSO, let me know.

Re: Where to get M855/SS109 bullets?

According to one vendor I've used supplies were getting thin a few weeks before this mess, he was getting low and had no idea when he'd be able to get more even then. Completely out of .224 now.

Re: Where to get M855/SS109 bullets?

I used to see ss109 bullets for cheap, now gunbroker has sellers with 20.00+ per hundered. I just ordered 1000 Sierrs 69gr HPBT and 1000 Sierra 75gr HPBT for my 5.56. I don't need the steel cores that bad!

Re: Where to get M855/SS109 bullets?

Caveat: I have not reloaded using the SS109 bullets.

That said, a couple months ago I finally got around to testing some military (Winchester?) green tip ammo and found the accuracy to be somewhere south of horrible. If I recall correctly, it was running 12+ inches at 400 yards. I had just finished a set of sub-MOA groups at that range using Sierra 77gr MK bullets and RL-15 powder in an AR.

Since I have a thousand or so of the SS109, I'll have to see if handloading improves the accuracy beyond spray-and-pray.

Re: Where to get M855/SS109 bullets?

Well since I have a bunch of 55 gr FMJBT for plinking, and 77gr SMKs for competitions, my question is:

Would the 62 gr SS109 have any benefit in hunting, i.e. against wild hogs? Or would I be better off getting a soft point round for that? If a soft point round is better, what do you recommend?

Re: Where to get M855/SS109 bullets?

Shot placement is the rule. I don't know of too many critters that could shrug off a head shot from a ss109. Plenty of deer sized game have fell from less. .22long rifle? What sized hogs you huntin? JPG

Re: Where to get M855/SS109 bullets?

If you want to shoot some hogs try the Nosler Partition or the Barnes TSX. They are pretty tough bullets in .224

Re: Where to get M855/SS109 bullets?

Accuracy is usually bad for SS109. The penetrator would have to be perfectly centered for the mass of the bullet to be evenly distributed about its axis. It usually isnt. I've always heard SS109 came about to help the 556 meet the standard required for steel pot helmet penetration. In other words, the ammo was a bandaid to cover the weakness of the 5.56 cartridge as a main battle round.

Check out RVOW.com
I dealt with them long ago with great results, but the owner died and his wife was having a helluva time trying to keep the business going. According to their new website, they have recovered and they show these in stock--BUT I have not dealt with them lately and don't know if the site is up to date. They list a phone number under "contact us" so I'd call them and deal with them on the phone if it were me.
