Re: need help building 308 ar

I too, am building (assembling?) an AR10, but I started with an Armalite lower, and am doing the best job I can, with it. I'm wanting to machine as many of my own parts are possible, literally.

Thing is, I'm starting from a frame/base/foundation, and going in a direction.

To me, you seem to be saying (analogy here:) you want "such-n-such size tires, and this particular hood-scoop..... what kinda vEHicle should you build?"

Is this really how things are done?

Re: need help building 308 ar

No that is not how u do things but being new to the ar 10 i know what I want on it just need to know what brand of lower will except the things I want to put on it.

Re: need help building 308 ar

Mega Maten receiver matched sets, works with Pmags and is one of the finer receivers. Noveske, is a great barrel, though ive heard good things about Rainier Arms Ultra Match barrels at a lower price. As for the rail, its a quad rail, there are lighter and cheaper options than buying from knights.

Id advise looking into the differences between building a large frame AR and a standard. Some parts you choose will exclude being able to use others. Most notable being the barrel/extension and upper receiver thread type.

Re: need help building 308 ar

I have a handy build parts ref. document if you want to send me a PM with your e-mail or e-mail me direct I can send you a copy. Any item on the document with a ""X" in the bb column was used on my rifle in 3/2011. It has proven to be a TAC Driver and done me well in several matches.

Tough time to get parts recievers are likely 7 to 9 months out and could get worse with the run on all things black rifle

Re: need help building 308 ar

I got a great deal on a DPMS LR 308 TAC 20 a few years back. Shot it some. It worked well. I then stumbled on a good deal on a Mega MATEN matched set. I bought that and proceeded to "build" an "AR 308" from my TAC 20.

What currently is left from the original DPMS is the buffer tube assembly, BCG, barrel, gas tube, gas block and some of the lower bits (mag release, etc.). As I replaced the different parts off of the DPMS I would just sell them. Eventually the barrel will be upgraded as well.

I think the MATEN is one of the best receiver sets to base a build off of.

This is what my rifle has

-Mega Arms MATEN matched receiver
-Geissele Super Semi Automatic Trigger
-MagPul PRS Stock in FDE
-MagPul MOE Pistol Grip in FDE

This is setup for longer distance shooting (20" DPMS barrel). If the madness ever settles down I will probably get another MATEN set and build a battle rifle with it. Probably try the Rainer 16" Select barrel.

Re: need help building 308 ar

Three years ago I built a nice AR 10 style rifle on Iron Ridge Armory billet upper and lower. They make both Armalite and DPMS type sets. DPMS type takes Magpul mags. Used PMI fore end and PRS stock. Nice.

The Maten is just built better is all. You can pull off a great rifle with either, but, the Maten will produce a better fit and finish.

Re: need help building 308 ar

Maten is certainly a very sweet ride no doubt. They are a proprietary platform which is why I steered clear. Parts are super hard to find for anything right now so keep in mind parts availability and future uppers you may build for the lower. DPMS platform is like the Small Block Chevy of AR platforms so I stuck there. Not saying anything bad about Armalite or Maten.
Most important parts beyond the upper and lower selection are Trigger, Barrel and BCG, those parts pretty much make the magic happen.
Many Upper and Lower combos exist out there, some are cleaner than others. NEMO and SI are excellent choices, JD also makes a clean set as well. Again those are just a couple to consider.
Stick with a nice battle proven Geissele trigger. There are others like JP that make very reliable triggers as well but those two would likely treat you right for many years to come and many rounds down range.
For a barrel Krieger makes a very nice M110 Service Barrel (and they're in stock right now) that would be hard to beat in the accuracy department. Bartlein is another easy no brainer if you're looking at a barrel you don't have to be embarrassed to say you own, just not sure they have them in stock.
Don't get the cheapest Bolt Carrier Group on the market, but you don't really need to buy the most expensive either. JP make super nice shit, but you will spend a pretty penny on it. If you have the money great, quite shopping and get a JP. Colt makes a nice Carrier group that I could certainly recommend.
Other parts would be Rail, stock, grip and nice to haves. Troy makes a nice rail and run them on several of my rifles, so do a couple buddies of mine. Stock of your choice, really depending on what you're planning on doing with this sucker. PRS are nice, but many complain about the weight. You cant use them in some service rifle matches either, you'll need the classic A2 style, I have both. Not essential but a nice to have as it is super function is the phase 5 tactical BAD lever. they are one of the few that make one for the AR10 and I just find them very helpful. I won't go into scopes because I know way less about them but for a good rifle those parts I listed are hard to beat for a sick AR10 that will put a squirrels eye out at a couple hundred yards behind the right driver and hand rolled ammo. Have fun building, you will learn a lot and appreciate the sport more for it.
