So I've got the funds now for my build, but no rifle until I buy an action!

I've searched around a few places on the web looking for good actions (<span style="font-style: italic">Surgeon, Defiance, Bighorn</span>) but can't seem to find anything in stock right now. I'm sure I'm overlooking some places that I'm unaware of that might have the above actions in stock ready to go.

<span style="font-weight: bold">So where should I look?</span> If there's a good smith that has them ready to go, please let me know. I've got a Bartlein .264" blank, a Timney and a chassis that needs an action which I can send out immediately.

Since I only own one rifle, I'd rather not wait 4 months for an action if I can help it, but I don't want to settle either. If I have to wait that long, then so be it, but I'd really like to get out and shoot asap. Thanks in advance.

Re: In search of a custom Action

Call AJ at Bighorn and see if he has anything available.

Bugholes has Stillers in stock. A lot of folks like those really well.

3rd Generation's website shows zero Surgeons in stock, but they might have something that's not on their inventory, or they might have some coming in soon.

    Good luck!

Re: In search of a custom Action

Both midway and brownells had surgeon actions in stock when I looked last night.

Re: In search of a custom Action

Check with Stiller . They usually have some Predators in stock. I used one in my last build and it is awesome!

call BAT or Barnard and see what they have.

Don't be impatient...find what you want and wait. If you're unwilling to do that, just get a used Remington 700, true it up and call it a day

Re: In search of a custom Action

Thanks all. I called AJ yesterday and left a message. Will try again soon. Very interested in going to his shop and seeing the Bighorn. I might have a hook-up with a Surgeon 591. I did see the one on Brownells, but at $1,461 and MSRP being $1,295 I think I'll shop around. Maybe the price is high due to demand and wait-time, I don't know.

As for Defiance, does one buy directly from their site? I'll give them a call too. Anybody know anything about what bolt-style I should look at? Seems they have three different kinds (cone, flat, recessed) Going with a Creedmoor most likely at this point. I really like all the options they offer.

    Thanks again.

Might want to check with George at GAP. He has a pretty good connection to Defiance. The Stiller recommendation is a good one as well.

Nope, never heard of Bruno's, thanks! And from that link, I just learned that BAT is an action, not a gunsmith!

This is why I posted this...I knew there was a lot out there I was unaware of.

Re: In search of a custom Action

I ordered a Defiance action early November and fabrication time was 3 weeks (and that's what they quoted). Definitely give them a call, they'll walk you through all the details and explain. Yes, you buy directly from them, shipped to your FFL.

Bighorns are made over on this side of the 25, Paul has one sitting in his display case over at TriggerTime gun club. http://www.triggertimegunclub.com/

I am sure he can get you setup on a build, he had a custom bighorn build sitting on the shelf a month or so ago. If you stop by you can at least get hands on with the action. Sure AJ is the source, but the gun club has a lot of nice toys (scopes and stocks, bipods etc).

    COfox,
Just go to Triggertime Gun Club in Longmont, the have Big Horn actions. They did have both LA and SA in stock last week. They are verry smooth and AJ makes great stuff and on top of that the guys at TT are great to deal with as well.

Re: In search of a custom Action

I just ordered a tac 30 from stiller last week, and i already have it here. He probably has some in stock..

Re: In search of a custom Action

The response has been great, thank you all. So far I've been offered a Defiance action and am waiting to hear if I can get a Surgeon real soon. Still want to check out the Bighorns...decisions, decisions.

Re: In search of a custom Action

    COfox,

I just got my BigHorn from AJ. Do your self a favor and get one too. I have a Stiller Tac338. The only reason I have the stiller is because AJ didn't make one for the 338 or I would have gotten one from him.

His new action is the heat and made locally. Would'nt spend money else where.
I know you want one now, but I'll be at the PD match & atCRC for the monthly match if you want to check it out.

Re: In search of a custom Action

I ordered the Rebel action from Defiance machine back in mid August, at that time they promised delivery within 60 days. Mine came two weeks early. I noticed they do have several actions for immediate delivery. Give them a call they spent about 20 minutes on phone with me explaining their options and answering my questions. Top Notch, professional, and very helpful. I plan to order another in the near future.

Re: In search of a custom Action

I tend to buy slightly used stuff, but I think if I was buying a new action and wanted the best bang for the buck I would buy a barreled Shilen action with the Savage style barrel nut.

    http://www.shilen.com/pricesBarreledActions.html

If You want the absolute best then buy a Avenger SR action or one of the Bat repeaters. Preferably the bolt should have 3 lugs and a extractor which cannot be blown back into my face if the rifle explodes like the Sako extractors can be.

    Hey Dino,

congrats on the action. Is it a "drop in" into your McRee stock?

Re: In search of a custom Action

I like the Bighorn, but it won't fit my McRees w/o modification, and the new one they have in the works is a 4 month wait I've heard.

I'm now heavily leaning towards a Defiance Deviant. Seems to have all I want, and are ready to go now. Unless I'm convinced otherwise, that's probably what I'll order after the new year.

I've heard/read some chatter about Defiance/Templar actions being finicky if they get dirty due to tight tolerances...is that true? They seem to be right up there with the Surgeons in the winners circle, based off what I saw in the post about what the pro's are using.
