It's unfortunate how spoiled my generation has become, this Christmas I got two $20 gift cards and some socks and I loved it. These people were never taught about the true meaning of Christmas, it definitely ain't about the presents.

Who said something about oranges? I remember Momma telling me about what they got for Christmas. She was born in 34 so you know what I am about to tell you. She said when they got an orange, IF mind you, they would eat the whole damn thing peeling and all and thought it was special. I know that is not embellished because Momma still eats brains, melts(spleen) and sweatbreads(pancreas) from a pig...nasty. I tell her she does it to remind herself how fortunate we are. I think of what Jerry Clower said,"We was poor, we was so poor, and then....the Depression hit!" Funny but it was real, and we laugh about it now because we have so much and are truly blessed.

These little shits make me sick but I suspect their time is shortly coming. I have had much influence in my lfe from those who lived through the Great Depression. The one thing they all imparted to me was the importance of not forgetting that time in our history and passing their stories on to my progeny. Most of us living today have never truly been in dire straights or worried about where are next meal would come from. Today we measure our tribulations by wether we get the latest game, toy, gadget, etc. not whether we had the eat pig offal because of the hunger pangs that keep us from relaxing in our comfy beds.

When the next one hits, and it will, history must be repeated when the generations forget where they came from, where will these spoiled fucks be? The day is coming when this generation will have to think about its selfish self serving, entitled, pampered past, and realize they lived like kings everyone.
When Uncle Santa Claus snatches the rug out from under their powdered asses they will become the savages they are with a few exceptional individuals rising out of the smelting pot.

I got to say it is a direct reflection of parenting.Most of or country's problem are a result of not teaching our kids to be adults. Unconditional "love" is a bye word for lazy. See the shootings at Conn. school. The kid needed help neither parent stepped up. I would go off on women but it isn't thier fault only as the fathers didn't stand strong either.

I'm in the process of getting divorced and we did the "splitting the cost" of Christmas. Well I gave her my half after we discussed not spoiling my girl more than she already is. I got here a pink Cricket just from me. Well mom got her a Furby,IPod touch,3DS nintendo,American Girl doll and accessories, a 42" LCD tv and a puppy! That's just what I can remember. She's 7........ I am personally ashamed that my kid has so much when I know families that have nothing.

I'm 31 years old and my mother still puts the same things in the stockings for us. 2 candy canes, an orange, and a toothbrush, and happy to get it. Not to mention that our "Christmas stockings" were part of my dads Christmas, new tube socks!. Been happening ever since I can remember, and it'd feel weird if we actually had stockings.

I recall talking to my friends about Christmas presents growing up and would not be surprised if I said similar things.

The difference, when I was in that age group there was not a place to post it where the world could see. It was just talk between friends at school... ala pre mobile device days, heck pre internet days for that matter.

And twitter is aptly named... Folks enjoy watching birds for their colors and songs, see... it’s really the same/same.

We B*tched when we were young and look at some of the threads on here, we b still B*tchin’, the topics have just changed.

I don't ever recall bitching about Christmas gifts as a kid. My kids did the crazziest thing this year. They worked, made money, and used it to buy presents for everyone. My daughter hugged a sweatshirt i got her for 10 minutes with a huge smile.

i remember it was the greatest thing just to run down stairs. never mattered what we got.Just having everyone together. I cant count how many Holidays i missed from my family thanks to the gov travel program.Id be ashamed if that was one of my kids. mine are all grown with kids of thier own and i try and make my gran kids. appreciate what they have.

I do believe that all of you have missed the reason for Christmas.

It was to celebrate the birth of the Savior Jesus Christ.
That alone was the reason for the season.

The gifts came along later as well as the fanfare and eventually
spoiled entitled brats.

In my house we celebrate it in this order

Lord
Family
Blessings
Gifts

It leaves little room for disenchantment when the first three dwarf the last one.

I lost my Mom the 29th of July this year. She was raised in the Great Depression. When I used to hear her and her brothers and sisters talk about their childhood, it would bring up a lot of emotion. Then I remember listening to her Mom and Dad. He was in the first world war. Or as he called it, "The Great War". When I think about the stories they told me, it almost makes me want to cry. Grandpa had an 8th grade education. But they raised 9 kids. With his money from WW1 he bought 84 acres on the side of a mountain. With about 15 of that actually tillable.

When Grandpa was away with the CCC Grandma used a broom one time to shoo a black bear out of Grandpa's herb garden at the edge of the woods.

Over the years he owned 8 horses or mules, and 3 cars. When he died in 1969 he had a '53 Chevrolet he bought used for $250 cash. He left property to Grandma and had cash in a fruit jar up in the rafters of the house. He had several thousand dollars in a savings account at the bank. And his funeral was already paid for.

Fruit and black walnuts and Grandma's home made fudge was about as good as Christmas from them got. And I wish I could live those days again.

We are a spoiled nation.

i think young people are disgruntled and the parents coddle them despite it because there are no freaking jobs to be had by them. when we were teens and we wanted something we went and did some odd jobs for some spending money. we also could reliably count on getting out on our own after high school reasonably easy if we worked for it. these kids dont think that is an option and so they just sit back and bitch. about everything. on everything we give them to bitch with.

I don't know about anywhere else, but in Arizona, people have quit putting ads in the paper because of the cost, and most folks advertise on Craiglist, on their own vehicles, in the doors of their businesses, etc, and they have <span style="font-style: italic">no one</span> knocking down the doors to work.

The generation x or whatever the fuck they call themselves ought to be renamed generation hammock, because that's about all this set of worthless fucks will ever run.

And I will never say all, but if you remove the kids that grow up in the country, on a farm, or in a family business where you <span style="font-style: italic">have</span> to work, I'd say the dope smoking, free love burn your bra generation of the sixties that ran this country in the shitter is head and shoulders above this self entitled bunch of fucks I see walking around in a glazed eye stare driven by their I-whatever the fuck in their hand at all times.

I grew up on a farm, from the time I was old enough to lift a hay bale that was my job for up to 18 hours a day in the summer. I paid for a good chunk of college baling hay and putting on roofs in the heat of the summer. I got the downpayment for the first car I bought myself by roofing a professor's house by myself in a week.

I was back home once several years back driving the country with my dad and I mentioned that it seemed all the farmers had switched over to either the large, machine-manipulated square bales or auto-stacking machines; nobody was in the fields with wagons hand-stacking anymore. I asked what the advantage was.

He said none, in fact it was driving costs up. The problem was that within a few years after I left for college they could no longer get reliable labor to work on farms. Even as the Great Recession set in and drove local unemployment to 25%, nobody would get their hands dirty with honest labor.

Possible, several cousins and I have traced our family's roots back to 1635 in the US and even farther back across the pond. Over 375, years I'm sure there are a lot of relatives I have never heard of or even dreamed of.

I am lucky as I have good kids.
I am proud of all 3 of them.
The Squaw and I are both Ag. types growing up on farms and ranches.
Throw in that Pa was a US Army soldier and cut very little slack.
Discipline was key to it. Taught them to work hard and do the best they could at any job they took on. They all had jobs when young and did anything from shoveling snow to working concrete.
When they were young it was not uncommon for them to get"Red Butt" if they made ass at one thing or another.
Today, one is a Fed correctional officer, one a RN working in a hospital and one flying freight airplanes.
Meanwhile, The Squaw and I are still on the farm, proud as hell of all of them. Regards, FM
