Rifle Scopes What mag range for shooting within 1200 yards

For a tactical match style rifle, is a 3.5x15 enough magnification if the majority of the shooting is within 1200 yards?

Is there ever a reason really that you'd need more than that within that range?

In my experience being zoomed in to 15 power restricts my field of view so much it hurts more often than not. When would say a 25x have an advantage within that range....if ever?

Depends on the drills at the match and target size. I like atleast 20x but I run a 5-25 on my match rifle. It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I was running a Premier Heritage 3-15 until recently and then switched to 5-25. I rarely shoot above the 15X range even at 1200, but where the 25X comes in is ranging UKD targets, identifying targets, and spotting. You can easily run with a top magnification in 15X in tactical matches.

I just got rid of my Vortex Razor....I found the 5x was too much on the low end to only get 20x on the big end. It was kind of awkward.

The glass was nice, but the eye relief was sketchy.

So I'm gonna be in the market again and I'm trying to figure where I need to be.

USO's 3.2 x 25 looks like a winner.

Why do you need such a low low end? Rarely go below 8x at matches. The top end is used more than a small low end.

I've just found that when I'm shooting a stage where there are multiple targets at relatively short distances....say like 200-500 yards.....it's easier to scan for and engage them rapidly, especially if it's a timed stage.

I'm sure I wouldn't have an issue with 5x on the low end but I would like to get more on the big end then....more than the Vortex provides.

If you need to go a bit lower and want to get out to a grand think about the HDMR 3.5-21X50. You can get a reticle that would keep you off the knobs as well. Make things a bit quicker and help with movers.

I've really been considering waiting for the new one to come out.

But man....$2000 street price for a Bushnell......seems steep.

I'd like to get my hands on one to check it out.

The HDMR 3.5-21X50 is a great scope with a very good range of magnification. I have noticed they start to get very dark above 18X which is about the limitation of its usable range IMO. Great choice for the $$ though.

I run a 5-25 on 20 for matches. Better eye relief and 25 is there if needed.

Run a HDMR and 99.9% of my shots fired in a match are on 21x including both sets of movers at K&M.
