Barrel Question

Well, I am in the middle of a build and trying to pick a barrel. I am build a 700 in a .308, I have a manners T4A stock coming and I need to get them the spec for the barrel. It seems that Bartlein Barrels are pretty popular with this forum, and I have heard nothing bad about them.
The local gunsmith, a really good guy, and build bad ass rifles, lots of custom stuff, build lots of rifles for comps and stuff. Well he uses Pac Nor Barrels in his builds. Just wondering if anyone has had any experiences with Pac Nor Barrels? I know Bartlein are cut barrels and Pac Nor are button barrels. I know there are a ton of threads out there about cut vs. button barrels. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Barrel Question

I have been looking into a build myself, and have found that the majority of the smiths on here prefer the cut rifling over the button. My best shooting rifle is barreled with a button rifled Hart, and it shoots in the .10s all day long. With that said, I decided to go with the opinion of my smith, as I am trusting him to build me a tack driver.

Re: Barrel Question

do some research on cut rifling vs button before you make a decision...several threads on the topic.

I, like many have had great results with button rifled barrels but the cut rifling always seem to shoot a little better, have been easier to clean and a little faster.

Re: Barrel Question

I like cut rifled barrels. I chamber my own and cut rifled barrels seem to machine better, leaving a nicer finish.

I exclusively use Obermeyer 5R barrels from Bugholes.com with very good results. Obermeyers bores are .002 undersize so require a smaller pilot, but they shoot great.

Re: Barrel Question

you know what I was thinking just thinking that.... my head hurts now, hahaha
I have been going back and forth reading threads from different forums, goggling, youtubing and there are lots of people out there that believe button is better and just as many believe cut is better. I guess it comes down to the final product and if people are happy with that barrel, so I guess I need to clarify my question. anyone have a Pac Nor Barrel and whats your experience with that rifle?

Re: Barrel Question

Dave is exactly correct. Outstanding quality barrels can be made by the single point cut method, buttoning or by hammer forging. Crap quality barrels can also be made my single point cut, buttoning or hammer forging. It's not the method, but the quality of the material that goes in, and the care and expertise of the barrelmaker themselves that determines the output.

Personally, I like single point cut, but I've also gone through hundreds of high quality buttoned barrels that gave outstanding accuracy and service.

Re: Barrel Question

I have a Pac Nor Super-Match SS #3 contour barrel on one of my 6x45s. It shoots very well. I have just over 1800 rounds through it and it still shoots around 1/2 moa. I have a Bartlien RV contour on my prarie dog gun in the same caliber. It shoots even better, but it's a much heavier barrel and rifle.

Re: Barrel Question

Thanks for your input! So if you, MWS, having owned both brands, were going to build a .308 for target shooting and a little hunting, which barrel would you put on your rifle? From your response below I think you would say a Bartlein, but please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks

Sean

Re: Barrel Question

So true Kevin, I am truely trying to wrap my brain around that idea. I just don't work that way unfortunately, for some dumb reason I want someone to just come out with a list and rank a barrel maker as the best so I can just go with that... HAHA A guy can dream right?

THanks,
Sean

Re: Barrel Question

Actually I have a Rock Creek 5R barrel on my current .308. I've used Bartlien on my last 2 builds and have been very happy with them. So yes probably Bartlien.

Re: Barrel Question

here is what i did.... im trying to do the same thing you did.... i asked input from everyone.... and here is the list you seek

1) Bartlein
1) Rock
1) ober
1) kreiger
1) YOUR PROBABLY NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM..
when you get to the top 3% of all the barrelmakers out there, something tell me you cant go wrong.. send your barreled action to bugholes and trust me.... you cant go wrong... even call greg up and talk to him.. i spent 10 min on the phone with him and i can tell you that just by talking to him he knows his stuff

Re: Barrel Question

I was beginning to see that... I figured as much, I was just wondering if people out there put Pac-Nor on the list. So you went through Bugholes n FL and had a good experience? THanks for the input.
