I'm on the lookout for a barrel blank to rechamber my 700 in 6.5 CM, and wondering what contour I should look for.

For the most part, this will be used at a 200 yd range, though I'd like to be able to take it up to the 1,000 yd range in TN on occasion. I doubt I'll be packing this around for hunting, so weight isn't a huge concern.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

Bartlein HV, .940" at the muzzle. What I have on my 6 Creed.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

If you're just going to be shooting at the range then go for the heaviest you can get.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

I use a Light Varmint 1.20 to .875 with a 5 inch shank so I can set it back a couple of times.
Don't be afraid to set the barrel back when the throat gets used up. I have very good results doing this.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

MTU / M24 or the Medium Palma like the CAPT said.

go a bit heavier if wt isn't an issue with your use.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

medium palma at minimum, MTU or heavy varmint would be my choice for a range rifle.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

I have a M24 rock blank on the way from bugholes that I am going to have PCR install on my 700 in 6.5 creedmoor.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

Remington Varmint or Medium Palma work well for me. I already have my next tube, its a Rock Rem Varmint fluted. Unfortunately I don't think the flutes will make a lick of difference other than look cool.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

I run a MTU fluted. Some say flutes will mess with harmonic but mine will shoot better than I can. I honestly think the flutes do help cool the barrel a little faster and you will save some weight.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

My original Creedmoor barrel was a 28" MTU. I have run it in tactical matches for 4 years and don't have any problems. Some would think it was too heavy though. It helps tame recoil some. A med palma to MTU would work fine for your needs. You can get a middle road M24/M40 contour which is a good middle line of weight and contour.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

Thanks for the info guys. So it appears the consensus is at least a medium palma contour, or no less than .820" at the muzzle end, correct?

I'll keep an eye on the PX for a deal on an appropriate barrel.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

I like my Bartlein M24/M40 contour on my .260 Rem. Its the perfect balance between Remington Varmint and the HV that I'd used in the past.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

my 260 wears a 24" remington varmint and I think it is just about perfect. I have a couple m24/m40's in different calibers and for my use I will not be going any heavier than rem varmint and/or sendero in the future.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

I've got a Heavy Bull barrel on my savage from Jim Briggs. 28" long and I believe !" at the muzzle. Its heavy as hell but pretty low recoil. I think next time I'm gonna opt for the lighter savage heavy barrel about .8" at the muzzle just for better maneuverability during competitions. I think I'll probably put on a brake. I still might get a brake on the beast I have now.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

.820 at muzzle with a rem varmint is perfect for me

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

On mine I have Harts and on one I got 5 1/2 finished at 25.25in it is a model 7 that weighs 9.0lbs with a 6.5-20x40 VXIII.And the other is a HV contour finished at 26.5in with 10-50x60 SIII and AICS 2.0 on Stiller action,Atlas bipod and it comes in at 17.2lbs.Both shoot very well. The lighter one did jump quiet a bit shooting it with one hand on bipod so I put a break on it.And the heavier one I put a break on it and you can watch impact shooting it one handed.

Re: Barrel contour for 6.5 Creedmoor

MTU if you shoot in static positions for extended rounds.

Medium Palma if you are going to be shooting in besides prone or sitting, such as in unsupported positions.

23" is a good balance of length to maintain velocity but not too long to be cumbersome.

Just finishing a 6.5cm build, my first precision LR. It has a Krieger #10MTU 8.5 twist @ ~ 28", with McMillian A-3 stock, 700 action with BDL Williams bottom, jewell trigger. 11 lbs 5 oz. (does not include base, rings, scope...)
